City buys Skyline Lanes site for city offices in Alpine
The City of Alpine purchased the Skyline Lanes building at a May 6 trustee sale for 17 500. Mayor Homer Hudgins outlined plans to remodel for the city offices and council chamber, possibly moving police and dispatch to City Hall and converting the bowling alley into a civic center with meeting rooms and parking. The council authorized 17 500 in warrants to finance the purchase, with back taxes totaling 13 200 distributed to the city school district and county.

Bud Roark Dies Here In Marathon Community
Bud Roark Jr., 67, died at 8 a m May 7 in Brewster Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He lived in the area 62 years ranching in southeastern Water County and owned the Holland Hotel in earlier years. He was born Sept 20, 1881 near Denton Texas and married Verna Robinson in Oklahoma. Survived by son Milton Roark of Kermit 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and a daughter in law Fer al Milton Roark. Graveside rites 4 p m today at Marathon Cemetery with Rev James Best officiating Memorials to Alpine Cemetery Association or Marathon Cemetery Association.

Alpine School Bond Election Heads to Polls on May 10
The Alpine district plans a May 10 bond election with three measures. Voters will decide on a $1.5 million high school project and an $800,000 plan to centralize elementary grades. Election will run 8am to 7pm at the Central School Cafeteria.

Moores Rescued After Being Marooned on Lake Amistad
Eddie Majella and David Moore were stranded on the Mexico shore of Amistad Lake after their 19 foot boat broke down on Sunday. They survived the night with food and water awaiting rescue as Park Service crews located them by plane and towed them to safety. The family plans to return to Amistad once the boat is repaired.

Reed to Speak at Sul Ross Spring Commencement
Texas education official Dr Bevington A Reed will address graduates at Sul Ross State College during the 1969 spring commencement at Jackson Field on Sunday May 18 at 7 p m. Reed has a long career in public education including roles at Dante Baker College, Howard Payne and Sul Ross College where he rose to dean and later served as chancellor of Minnesota's state college system.
