J. W. Merrill Retirement Ends 64 Years in Jeff Davis Office
Fort Davis Texas May 5 Jesse W Merrill 92 resigned as Jeff Davis County Precinct 1 commissioner ending a 64 year run in public office. He recalls being elected to county roles from 1890 to 1952 and helped map county lines and establish survey records across the Big Bend region. Merrill served as county surveyor, judge, and finally commissioner for over three decades before his resignation.

O. French Victim of Heart Attack
O Otis French 65 longtime Brewster county resident and World War I veteran died suddenly of a heart attack last Saturday between Alpine and the Big Bend National Park while en route from the park to Alpine. Born March 15 1889 in Daingerfield he came to Alpine in 1913 and worked in dirt contracting and later as road supervisor at the county and automotive operator at the park. He married Vesta Bagley Rowland July 9 1930 and they lived in Alpine before moving to the park. He was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery with Masonic rites conducted by the Big Bend park lodge.
