Mountain Doin's Rodeo Sparks Pioneer Week in Alpine

The Alpine chamber of commerce will host the second annual rodeo next Friday through Sunday with top national performers. Mayor Kizzoner proclaims Pioneer Week to boost local enthusiasm as residents wear Western garb and visitors are expected for a big turnout.

Contracts Awarded for Sul Ross College Buildings

The board of regents awarded contracts Wednesday for new Sul Ross College buildings totaling over 300000 dollars. Work includes 30 brick tile student cottages with Ingersoll kitchen units, moving the officers club from the air field to campus as a student union, and adding two wings to the gymnasium. J M Eichholtz of San Antonio is the winning bidder, construction to start in 10 days.

Kent Family Buys Alpine Grocery on East Holland Ave

Mr and Mrs Tom Kent purchase Alpine Cash grocery from Mr and Mrs Claude Hess and take charge with Mr and Mrs Cecil Mc Daniel operating the store. Mr McDaniel is a Sul Ross student and Mr Kent serves as principal of the Centennial school. The sale occurred last September.

Mrs. Lou Chastain Gillett widow of Capt James B Gillett longtime Brewster County sheriff died in an El Paso hospital after an extended illness. Funeral at Marfa Christian church with Rev L D Anderson officiating. Interment in Marfa cemetery. She born in McKinney Texas married Captain Gillett May 1 1899. Survived by three daughters a son five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Alpine FFA Poultry Team Takes Second at A&M Meet

The Alpine FFA poultry judging team placed second in the state contest at Texas A&M, led by Gordine Barrow as the second highest individual. Members were Kenneth Killion Jerry Burling Gordine Barrow and Louis Hernandez with Hernandez as alternate. The squad also earned early firsts in Area II at Sul Ross College and in the tri area at Texas Tech.

Marathon Seniors Travel Tall Tale of a Down State Trip

Marathon seniors recount a four day tour from April 22 to 28 visiting East Texas sites. They toured Breckenridge Lodge San Antonio Fiesta parade Galveston and the Gulf coast. Stops included Alamo St Jose Mission San Jacinto Battle Field Capitol Austin and San Angelo with Eddie Arnold at the Hangar.

Mother's Day Service At M. E. Church

A special Mother's Day service will be held at the Methodist church Sunday morning with recognition for all mothers. The oldest and youngest mother and the mother with the largest family will receive a plant. Special music and a Mother's Day message will be provided, followed by films in the evening.

Three Fire Alarms Reported With Minor Damage

The city fire department answered three alarms since last Saturday. A grass fire at Altuda burned a few acres before control. Edwin Fowlkes residence in West Alpine had an overheated motor Tuesday night. A rent house on East Holland avenue owned by H. M. Van Fossan had a small blaze from wiring short Tuesday night.

A set of hospital notes lists multiple patients with dates for major operations in early May. Alpine public schools awarded nine buildings at air field

D L Cross and the Alpine school board report an on the field award for nine Alpine school buildings including a gym and theatre at Marfa Army Airfield and Fort D A Russell. Final approval awaits Jack Cowart while War department reactivation plans could affect timing. Moving the buildings to Alpine is hoped within six weeks or sooner.

Toltecs win first Big Bend league game at Fort Davis

The Alpine Toltecs improved to 1-0 in the Big Bend league by defeating the Fort Davis Cats 7 to 5 in ten innings. The game was tied 5-5 after nine innings before Danny Chief delivered a two-run hit in the top of the tenth. The Toltecs will face Marathon Blue Caps at Ramos Field Sunday at 2:30 in a non league contest.

Cowboys Split With Davids in Alpine Series

The Alpine Cowboys beat the House of David 11 to 6 on Saturday behind Thornton and a 16 hit attack led by Peden Herricks and Becker. Sunday the House of David won 11 to 1 as Wycoff held Alpine to five hits and five errors hurt the Cowboys.

Pioneer Week Rodeo Demands Western Garb in Alpine

Alpine residents and visitors must wear two Pioneer or Western style garments during Pioneer Week May 10 to 16 to avoid fines. A mobile jail will operate on Holland Avenue and at Jackson Field for those resisting the rule during the May 14 and 15 rodeo days.

City Taxpayers Call Mass Meet At County Courthouse

A mass meeting of city taxpayers is scheduled for next Wednesday evening May 12 at 8 o clock in the county courthouse. The purpose is to discuss recent raises in city tax valuations and all interested parties are urged to attend.

The city office issued a warning that traffic laws will be tightened and all speeding violations must stop. Annual Church Supper Tonight and Mother's Day Service

The Christian church holds its annual fellowship supper tonight at 7 30 in the new Educational building with a pot luck format.
