Alpine Man Awarded RAF DFC for Antarctic? No Alaska Flight
Lieut Jonn G. Holland, Alpine native, received the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary aerial achievement in Alaska. The decoration was presented April 23 at 11th Flying Force Headquarters in Alaska after a year in the Aleutians, flying cargo missions in severe weather. Local fund drive praised for War Bond support and Alpine students boosted the goal beyond two jeeps.

Alpine volunteer fire department seeks donations to buy a new fully equipped fire truck for prairie fires in the Alpine territory. Two Brewster County Men Inducted At Ft Bliss Center
Two groups from Brewster County reported for army service at the Fort Bliss induction center last week. The first group of four Alpine volunteers—Ernest M. Thornton Jr Byron W. Wright William H. Forester and King Terry Jr.—were inducted Tuesday and began training Wednesday. The second group inducted Wednesday included Werner Hollis Joe V. Dozier Marmon Alfredo A. Silvas James Norman and John W. Gentry Jr. Dozier and Silvas entered the Navy while Hollis Norman and Dozier were assigned to army duties.

Fort Davis May 5. Cpl. Jose M. Tercero, reported missing in action, writes from a German concentration camp that he was captured February 17. He asks his parents to send clothing tobacco papers for rolling, chocolate candy, and chewing gum, and to contact the Red Cross for directions. The letter bears German and French postmarks, with no camp location given.

First WAAC Group To Arrive May 20th
Mystgt Clyde O Price a former MacArthur aide in the Philippines now teaches machine guns and side arms at an advanced flying school. Enlisting in 1917 he served in France and China and as an ROTC instructor in Los Angeles. He predicts a forceful campaign to retake Corregidor and Bataan. The Army WAAC program at Sul Ross College prepares to welcome the initial contingent of 215 trainees at Alpine around May 20 with 215 more to follow weeks later. Officers and staff, including Major James B. Ware, arrange quarters in the girls co op building and Mason George Hedebeck leads instructional plans. Trainees will undergo six weeks of administrative training, eight hours daily, six days a week, before transfer to posts nationwide for clerical duties.
