The Rev Glen W Bales longtime pastor at North Side Baptist Weatherford Texas accepts the post at First Baptist Alpine. Park Land Bill Clears Committee for Big Bend Acquisition

The House Public Lands committee approved a bill to authorize the Interior department to acquire about 8,000 acres of remaining non federal land in Big Bend National Park Texas. Rep Ken Regan said the parcels are scattered creating gaps in the park boundary and delaying road construction.

Presbyterians to Dedicate New Sanctuary Next Sunday

The First Presbyterian church will dedicate its new sanctuary on Sunday May 7 at eleven. Rev J Hoytt Boles Executive of Texas Synod will deliver the dedicatory sermon and assist in the ceremony. The church traces back to 1892 with five pastors and three buildings. The new semi Gothic sanctuary features a memorial window of The Sower. Special choir numbers will be performed.

Metropolitan Opera baritone Alexander Sved performed a program of operatic arias lieder and folk songs for an appreciative Alpine audience at Sul Ross College on April 27. The Hungarian singer impressed with bel canto technique and a cantabile upper register. George Kelver accompanied, sharing credit for an inspiring musical evening on campus.

Alpine Lady Relatives Die in Friday Clyde Storm

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Tabor and their daughter Annie Mae along with a uncle, aunt and cousin of Mrs. B. B. Bounds of Alpine were killed when the Friday storm struck Clyde.

Fred Ellyson Delivers Sul Ross Concert Finale Season

Fort Stockton pianist Fred Ellyson presented Schumann Concerto in A minor with Sul Ross College Symphony Orchestra, closing the 1949 1950 season in the opening event of Sul Ross Fine Arts festival. The program included Schubert Unfinished Symphony Gretry Cephale et Procris Beethoven contredances and Jealousy. Ellyson, student of George Kelver, will graduate with a Bachelor of Music in August. Festival continues with May 1 4 6 7 events under Fine Arts Division chair Glenn F. Davis.

Storm toll rises near Abilene as family killed

The latest storm near Abilene claimed the lives of a couple and another couple living near the Tabors. Investigators report a deadly weather event struck the area Friday.

Paisano Tabernacle Nears Completion and Inspection Planned

The Paisano encampment building committee schedules a 10 o clock May 16 meeting to inspect the nearly complete tabernacle and review plans for extra building. Seating equipment is set to arrive the same day. Committee members are Barney Hubbs and Don Littleton. Six 18 by 24 foot teaching shed sites were laid out, with contractor Junior Gray to start work Monday.
