Fox hunt turns grim in Alpine amid rabid fox alert
Alpine residents joined a town fox chase after a fox crossed the D S Mobil Station driveway near Central School. Temple Stumberg and Paul Weyerts located the animal, Hallie Stillwell reported it, and Temple killed it with a .22. The rabid fox triggered an emergency and state aid to fund an eradication program.

Brewster County Launches Drive Against Rabies
Brewster County and Alpine officials joined county and state efforts to halt a rabies outbreak after a rabid fox near Central School and two rabid animals 400 miles south of Marathon were confirmed. Health officers urged vaccination for dogs and cats, ordered vaccination tags, and planned an intensive public canvass. Mayor Hugh White and County Judge Felix McGaughy appealed for community support as patrols and warnings spread through Alpine and surrounding areas.

Jim Wilson aged 64, a member of a pioneer Brewster County ranching family, was found shot at his home around 8:48 am Wednesday. Funeral services 10 this morning at First Baptist Church, Rev Ralph Wootton officiating. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by two daughters, with investigation by Sheriff Jim Skinner and County Judge Felix McGaughy. A P 38 pistol was found beside the body.

Red Cross Reorganization Planned in Alpine Events
A Red Cross representative will visit Alpine to reorganize the chapter after a three year gap. He will address Lions Tuesday May 8, the Rotary Wednesday May 9, and the Study Club Thursday May 18. Mr Hamilton will explain Red Cross operations and discuss the need for the group. AR Gard, home service director, and City Crawford, treasurer, have shouldered duties during the lull. The Red Cross drive for the year has been led by Fred Jack.

Alpine Chamber of Commerce officials announce a planned Alpine Garment Manufacturing Co plant to produce children's clothing. Aptitude tests for women seamstresses from Alpine, Marathon, Fort Davis and Marfa will be held May 7 at 8 a.m. The project, supported by local capital and the Tex-Son firm, aims to create a $30,000 investment and about $2,000 weekly payroll once staffed.

Four Injured in Head On Crash Near Alpine
Four persons were injured in a head-on collision on Highway 90 near the Marfa Alpine Airport. A 1955 Buick sedan carrying Mr and Mrs Francis Wasserboeher of West Covina collided with a vehicle carrying Arthur B Johnson and Adolph Edward. Johnson and Fa wards were seriously injured, while Wasserbaeher, 57, and his wife Muriel, 86, suffered only light injuries. The injured were taken to Alpine Hospital by Kelly Funeral Home ambulance from Marfa.

Twisters Strike Near Hovey and Marathon
A Monday afternoon twister hit northeast of Alpine and north of Marathon, cutting power and telephone lines. The storm wrecked a water well rig on the G. W. Hargus place, damaged a Howe trailer, three windmills, and a truck while tearing a 1/4 mile wide path and snapping seven spans of line. No injuries were reported.
