The 12 minute film, viewed by ten million in the United States, presents desert beauty and local life from Castolon to Santa Helena, highlighting Rio Grande contrasts and desert flora such as acatillo.
Newton B. Drury and Conrad L. Wirth of the National Park Service lead an on site study of Big Bend National Park development. The four day visit in late April includes M R Tillotson and staff, with El Paso Alpine connections and a luncheon at the Holland hotel. The visit highlights Texas Big Bend Park’s planned 788000 acre site and funding via a 1.5 million appropriation.
Five hundred seventy eight men aged 45 to 64 were registered in Brewster county last Monday, per the Selective Service board. The count falls short of the earlier estimate by about 40, as the third registration on Feb 16 totaled 410. Registrants receive certificates and must carry them. order numbers will be issued May 20. They will later complete an occupational questionnaire for informational purposes only.
Funeral services for T M Mack Sawyer a 48 year old Fort Stockton businessman fatally injured in a Wednesday car crash near Alpine were held Saturday at the Methodist Church. Rev Ray B McGrew led the service with active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers from Fort Stockton Alpine and surrounding towns. Interment followed at Elm Grove cemetery under Livingston Funeral Home.
Billy Harrington, 20, a senior at Alpine High School, was seriously injured last weekend when high pressure water from a hose struck his eye at Gut Servicenter where he works part time. He was treated at Alpine Hospital and later moved to El Paso for further examination and treatment, his mother accompanying him.
Local workers prepare for sugar ration registration on Monday and Tuesday May 4 and 5. Families north of the railroad will register at Central school starting at 9 am Monday, while those south register at Centennial school. Registrations allow any 18 year old family member to sign up for the entire household. The note also reports a first shipment of 2000 units of refined candelilla wax from Border Wax Co in Big Bend south of Marathon, destined for New York City, with weekly shipments expected to rise.

It instructs on reporting sugar on hand by pounds whether white brown or other, and states registrants must register themselves not as part of a household. Two soldiers from Fort D. A. Russell Marfa were treated for scratches and bruises after an auto crash on North Fifth Street last Sunday. One man was thrown from the car when it hit a dip near Cotter corner, the other lightly injured when the car finally rolled over. A woman companion escaped injury. Charges of reckless driving were filed in justice court following the accident.
Mrs. Dela McElroy, social director of Lawrence Hall at Sul Ross College, will resign June 1 to take a special government post for women in Oklahoma. She is succeeded by Mrs. R. B. Griffin of Waxahachie, who comes with her daughter Emily Ann to join Alpine High. Mrs. Griffin is a former Trinity University student from Waxahachie.
In a brisk desert exercise near Terlingua and Big Bend country, Texas Defense Guard units under Capt Zenos Decie Capt Carl Thain and Capt John Edmondson converged from Marathon Alpine Presidio and Fresno canyon to retake the mining town held by enemy parachute troops. The operation showcased fast movement across rough terrain and coordinated guerilla like tactics to surround and overwhelm the invaders.
The Latin American Youth Club hosted a Pan American dinner last Friday at Little Mex ico. Guests included Lt. Watkins and Mrs. Alee Cowan, Miss Mary Stather Hitt, Dr. and Mrs. Ol ford Casey, Rev. Wrenda isals, Vice-Consul and Mrs. Santiago A. Campbell, Bil Hancock, and many others. Speakers, including rank Villareal and Mrs. Se rgundo Garcia, praised the club and its Pan American ideas while Vice Consul Campbell cited Pan American Day messages from President Av. In Ceminsho.
Sul Ross announces a new Military Science course this week. Interested students should contact W. J. Smith of the Industrial Education department. Classes meet at 8 o clock on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays.
