Glimpses of The Big Bend Publication 1916 Hidden Era

A fragment from Marathon resident Allie Davis exposes The Big Bend Vol. 1 No. 1 dated November 30 1916. Jody P. Harris Mineral Wells edited this hand lettered issue produced by Texas National Guard Company 1 while stationed at Roberts wax factory Rio Grande front during Pancho Villa raids. The piece reflects home front concerns on strikes and defense funding and notes a transfer to Sul Ross museum for preservation. The author also comments on wartime labor issues, public opinion, and local happenings with a homesick tone.

West Texas Vocational Groups Set For April 5 Auto Licenses

About 350 vocational agriculture students from 38 West Texas schools will compete in El Paso events on April 4 5 including live stock judging dairy cattle judging poultry soils crops farm shop and wildlife contests at Sul Ross College The event is sponsored by Sul Ross with prizes of banners and gold plated FFA watches Coaches and teachers from Sul Ross will supervise entertaining demonstrations in the college auditorium and a Friday night picture show The program includes a correction about a prior misreport and notes Brewster County issued 628 vehicle licenses for 1941 up to that time with 454 passenger cars 68 farm vehicles and 106 commercial vehicles registered to date and more licenses pending at Terlingua.

20-30 Club Collecting Old License Plates To England

The 20-30 club collects old auto license plates to send to England for re processing for armament use. Nearby towns run similar drives. plates left at filling stations will be picked up by club members with auto owner cooperation hoped for. The club also contributed $5 to Easter Seal Crippled Children drive and plans school safety signs for children crossing streets.

Jeff Davis County Ranchmen Profit From 545 Hunters

Open season deer harvest in Jeff Davis county totaled 383 bucks for 1940, including 342 black tail and 41 whitetails. Hunting managers shifted to fewer hunters at higher fees, with 545 listed in 1940 versus 710 in 1937, while county landowners earned about 11,810 from hunting privileges.

Independent Basketball Tournament at SA Gym Tomorrow

Eight teams compete in the annual independent basketball tournament at the college gym in San Antonio tomorrow. The games start at 9 AM with afternoon and evening sessions. Teams include Saint Baptist, Van Horn, Sanderson, Imperial Buena Vista and three locals. Sanderson won last year. Admission is 10 cents for students and 20 cents for adults per session.

Rains Fall Easter Seal Drive Lays Groundwork Here

Heavy rains across the Highland country last week boosted moisture for ranches and ranges, with Alpine and surrounding areas reporting up to .31 inches and Marfa totaling 43 inches. A hail event north of Alpine and frost earlier raised concerns, while Easter Seal campaigns begin nationwide to aid crippled children, with Texas’s society running through Easter Sunday and seeking public support via Seals of Friendship mailed to Alpine residents.

Fort Davis Sees Sharp Traffic Rise After Pavement Extension

Fort Davis notes a surge in traffic as the road north from town nears completion with six miles of unpaved road left. Observers report more passenger cars cattle trucks and freight deliveries using the Alpine Balmorhea to Pecos route and note New Mexico plates and Plains traffic passing through. Bruce Duncan of Alpine wins a pistol slow-fire medal at a El Paso sheriff and police club shoot with 30 entrants. Connie Duncan also takes a medal in the ladies event.

Park Bill Endorsed By Westex Judges

The Texas Defense Guard battalion has been promised the first available guns and equipment from the War Department for use in Brewster County. About 500 volunteers in five companies will supply uniforms and gear costing roughly one dollar per man. On April 5 public TAG sales will benefit the Texas Defense Guard and American Legion, with proceeds shared and excess funds used for company mess funds. Delegations from the American Legion Auxiliary and Texas Defense Guard will be in towns to sell TAGS bearing the American Legion emblem and Great Seal of Texas.

Park project touted as top Texas investment by real estate chief

E. Mart Townsen president of the Texas Real Estate Association told WBAP that Big Bend National Park development will benefit property owners, state funds and local governments. He called the park a major civic enterprise and the nation’s tourist business a strong Texas opportunity, arguing higher returns come with more business activity.

Three More Men Ordered To Report April First

Three more men are called to report April 1 for selective service training. They will report the next day at Fort Bliss, El Paso. One of the group is Ty Cobb Casey from Brewster County while Herbert Louis Dalton, retired in Clifton, Arizona, and Fatal Ira Hardy in Pecos, Texas, are volunteers. Clarence Pig Holman of Alpine has enlisted for a three year term at Fort Bliss as a parts man in the army repair shop.

Resolution backs speedy enactment of Big Bend park funds

The West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Assn met in Wichita Falls and unanimously approved a resolution urging Texas lawmakers to pass Senate Bill No. 128. The bill would allocate funds to acquire property within the Big Bend National Park area in Brewster County, Texas, viewing it as a statewide investment with cultural and recreational value. A copy of the resolution was sent to the House and Senate secretaries and to the bill sponsors.

Alpine Masonic Lodge Celebrates Debt Retirement

Alpine Lodge No. 766 A F and M retired about $800 of building debt last week with a special program after the meeting. A similar amount was paid last year and a turkey dinner followed. Indebtedness has been reduced from around $4,000 to just over $3,000 over five to six years, with District Deputy Grand Master Carl Shults presenting a report to Grand Lodge.
