Advertising Area Plans Forming Big Bend Chamber

At a Marfa meeting Wednesday night delegates from Alpine Marfa Van Horn Presidio Fort Davis and Marathon discussed forming a Big Bend chamber of commerce. Plans call for a two from each town board and a president and vice president. An executive of Trans Texas Airways said regular flights would begin after radar installation by April. Alpine leaders Don Littleton and Aubrey Edwards named as tentative board members.

New Reservoir In Operation For City Water Supply

The citys 400000 gallon reservoir, finished last month, was put in operation Tuesday night. City water engineer T R McPherson said it adds to total storage of over a million gallons, with four pumps delivering 1152000 gallons daily to ensure ample supply. The reservoir was filled, chlorinated, and allowed to settle to clear lime and other matter.

Bloodworth Enters Race For New Mexico Governor

Lloyd P. Bloodworth former Alpine chamber of commerce manager announced as a Democratic primary candidate for New Mexico governor on June 8. He started a newspaper in Ruidoso after leaving the area two years ago and has held senior roles in El Paso and the Southwestern Chamber of Commerce. He is a World War II and World War II veteran with ties to Santa Fe during the war.

Meeting of Junior CC Set For Monday Night

A newly organized Junior chamber of commerce announces a meeting at the Holland hotel next Monday night at 7 30. Discussions will include plans for the installation and inauguration on April 12 and other appointed matters. A good attendance is urged.

Chamberlain Resigns From Alpine Police Post

L. H. Rud Chamberlain, Alpine police officer for several months, submitted his resignation effective with the new city administration. Officials praise his efficiency and regret his departure. He will remain in Alpine and relocate his headquarters to run a business selling police and fire equipment, a former occupation.

Alpine High Chorus in Sunday musicale features soloists

Alpine High School chorus directed by Bill Carrico presented an afternoon musicale sponsored by the Alpine Music Club in the high school auditorium. Soloists included Juanita Payne, Charlotte Slight, Billie Fulcher, and Mary Duncan. The program offered four choral selections and various piano pieces, highlighting disciplined singing and community musical life.

New M System Grocery Store Under Construction

Excavation began on a new brick and tile store at North Sixth Street and Avenue FE opposite the post office. The 50 by 40 foot building includes a 20 by 50 foot east side basement and a 50 by 60 foot auto parking lot. Ralph W. Peters is contractor. Dom Adams owner says no completion date yet and nearby tenants must vacate by May 1.

Alpine Independent school trustees set for April 3 election

Dr L Cross president of Alpine Independent School District announced that he and J C Coleman will have their names on the ballot for two trustee positions in the April 3 election. By noon Wednesday no other candidates had entered. Voting will take place in the courthouse with Carl Shults presiding.

VA Office in Alpine Closed for Week

The Alpine Veterans Administration office serving Sul Ross College and veterans in Brewster and neighboring counties was closed Wednesday. A protest in Washington by Rep. Ken Regan did not change plans, and future VA services for area veterans will come from the San Antonio office. Veterans should provide full name address serial number and claim number to receive prompt service.

Alpine patrons welcome the district PTA conference set for April 7 and 8 with state officers led by district president Mrs. N. H. Keller. Principal speaker is Mrs. Henry Mings of Tyler, state vice president. Local chairs are Mrs. Guy Crawford and Mrs. R. M. Hawkins. Veterinarian to Test Dairy Cattle for T B Bangs Disease

A Brewster County voting strength breakdown shows Prec 1 East Alpine leads with 569 poll taxes and 17 exemptions. Prec 1 West Alpine follows with 531 polls and 11 exemptions, Prec 2 Alpine with 515 polls and 18 exemptions, Prec 4 Marathon with 371 polls and 3 exemptions, and Prec 3 Terlingua with 46 polls and 1 exemption. The Alpine boxes total 1615 polls and 28 exemptions, county totals 2032 polls and 50 exemptions.

Mrs. J. C. Cooley was elected president of the Alpine Parent-Teacher Association at the March meeting. Other officers elected were Mrs. A. M. Queen as first vice president, Mrs. Edwin Fowlkes as second vice president, Mrs. W. A. Wilson Jr. as secretary, and Mrs. N. O. Miller as treasurer.

Many Vehicles In County Remain Unregistered

With the March 31 deadline near, the county tax collector reports 862 vehicles licensed to date for 1948. Of these, 592 are passenger cars, 155 commercial, and 115 farm. Auto owners are urged to register before the final date to avoid delays and lines.

Morelock Funeral Is Held Wednesday

Final rites for Lt jg Horace Weatherly Morelock son of Dr and Mrs H W Morelock were held in Austin with Rev Charles A Sumner officiating at Weed Carley Funeral Home. Burial included military services by Travis Post 76 American Legion. Morelock born July 4 1909 at Kerrville rose to Sul Ross College president emeritus era family later moved to Alpine. He enlisted 1944 trained Tucson and Treasure Island later commanded SS Munsey guard in Pacific theater.

Eastern Air Lines seeks southern transcontinental route approval

Captain Eddie Rickenbacker announced a Civil Aeronautics Board pre hearing on April 15 for Eastern Air Lines to extend its existing service from San Juan to San Francisco via two coast to coast routings. The plan would link 64 cities and serve the Southeast and Gulf Coast states with a single carrier coast to coast service.
