New Park Telephone Service Dedication Set for April 15

A dedication ceremony for the new telephone service at Big Bend National Park will be held at 10 30 a m on April 15. Sen Dorsey B Hardeman will represent Gov Allan Shivers, with dignitaries from the National Park Service and West Texas civic leaders invited. A barbecue lunch will follow. Alpine committee members include Dr Bryan Wildenthal and Mayor Hugh White.

Lobos to Host Fort Bliss Team in Weekend Doubleheader

The Fort Bliss Falcons travel to Kobernot Field for two games against the Sul Ross Lobos today and tomorrow both starting at 3 p m. Fort Bliss, a top service program, should offer two competitive games for local fans before next week’s road trip to Texas Tech in Lubbock. The Lobos split with Baylor last weekend, winning the first 7 1 and losing the second 11 4. Lefty Kelton Russell shone with 12 strikeouts in a complete game for Sul Ross while Norman Cash hit a two run homer and Leo Burkhalter added a triple.

Uranium Prospecting Suggested in Big Brewster Area

A Texas report by the Bureau of Economic Geology urges thorough uranium prospecting in Big Bend country around Terlingua. Sul Ross Alpine Weather Station to Open April First

The Sul Ross Alpine weather station will begin operation at 12:30 a.m. Friday April 1. N B Ward of the U S Weather Bureau announced the installation of instruments and supervision by Dr Wallace Duncan. The station will provide current observations about every three hours to the Midland office and then to the national teletype circuit under code 262.

Alpine Milliner Eula Cross Dies After Long Illness

Eula Mae Cross 79 a longtime Alpine resident died at home after a prolonged illness following surgery in Dallas. Born September 8 1875 in Waxahachie she lived in Alpine for 37 years and ran a millinery shop until 1937. Funeral held at First Methodist Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by four sons and multiple stepchildren and grandchildren.

Alpine Lions Minstrel Next Thursday at High School

Alpine Lions stage a minstrel in the High School auditorium next Thursday at 8 15 p m with Eddie G directing and Alan Briggs as interlocutor. The cast features Chick Ives Russell McMeans Everett Turner Bill Hight Larry Ferris John Colwell Bob Halpern Aaron Jacoby and others. Hard Freeze Damages Alpine Area Fruit Crops

A Monday night hard freeze severely damaged crops in the Alpine area. Readings reached 18 degrees in West Alpine with Sul Ross College at 23. Many peach and plum trees were in full blossom when the frigid wave hit before moderating by Wednesday morning.

New 36 Inch Telescope Planned for Mount Locke

McDonald Observatory prepares a 36 inch light collector telescope on Mount Locke near the 82 inch instrument. A new dome will house the setup about 500 yards below the existing telescope. Construction of the mount will take 18 months and the telescope may be ready late in 1956. County officials visited Terlingua and Big Bend schools.

Rotary Good Will Junket to Chihuahua City

Over 30 Rotarians and guests leave Alpine early tomorrow for a Rotary sponsor trip to Chihuahua City to observe the Golden Anniversary program and dinner. The group tours sights Sunday and returns Monday evening, with a Lions Club dinner in Ojinaga. A Rotary Golden Anniversary film will be shown at Alpine next Thursday.

City Commission Awards Drilling Contract to Paul Gooden

Alpine officials awarded Paul Gooden a drilling contract after a low bid for the Riess water well on Kokernot Hill. The exploratory test will reach 200 feet, with Stephan Riess directing future operations and Ashley Classen overseeing specifications. A road from Loop Road to the site is being prepared and a $5300 pump may be deployed.

Alpine Trustees OK Enrichment Program and Bus to Meet

Alpine Public School Board approved continuing the enrichment program and authorized transporting at least 25 Alpine High students to the Regional Interscholastic League meet in Lubbock on April 23. They also approved resignation of Leonard Wardlow, set election procedures, and studied 1955 56 finances amid rising equipment costs.
