District Legion Auxiliary Meet Opens Here Saturday

Alpine hosts the 16th District Legion and Auxiliary convention with joint registrations at 9 a.m. in the Legion Home and a full weekend of events including luncheons, a cocktail party, a semi formal dance, and Sunday memorial services in Alpine School Auditorium. District officers and dignitaries from across Texas attend, with a barbecue dinner to conclude Sunday activities.

Sears Eyes Alpine for New Textile Plant in Texas Plans cited for 150 jobs and 16 000 to 20 000 square feet

Sears Roebuck Co expressed interest in locating a clothing factory in Alpine D C with Alpine Chamber of Commerce president Thomas saying talks with Sears in Chicago aimed at a Texas plant. Initial hiring around 150 workers and space of 16 000 to 20 000 square feet were noted. Alpine officials expect word within days. Negotiations also ongoing with a San Antonio manufacturer.

C. T. Taylor Dies From Oil Well Accident

C T Taylor 48 of Alpine died in a Fort Stockton hospital from injuries in a recent oil well accident. He was buried after funeral services held Monday. Survivors include his widow and four children, and he was brother of Mrs Dorothy T Foley of Alpine.

Alpine Mayor Welcomes 16th District American Legion Convention

Mayor Hugh S White of Alpine Brewster County Texas extends greetings to American Legionnaires and Ladies of the Auxiliary of the 16th Congressional District for their March 24 25 convention. He notes Alpine’s Healthy Highlands setting and American Legion milestone as the organization marks its 87th birthday and praises its 37 years of service to God country and free institutions.

Sul Ross Lobos to Visit Sul Ross Colorado in Alpine Series

Sul Ross Lobos travel to Alpine for a two game baseball series against Sul Ross with Colorado Here Next Week. The Lobos swept opponents last weekend with 16-8 and 19-3 wins and followed with 13-1 and 18-4 victories over Baylor. Clifford Jones and Buddy Watts led the pitching and hitting in the Baylor games.

Paul Goodman Named Manager of Morrison's Store

Paul Goodman is named manager of Morrison's in Alpine succeeding Lester Farmer who transferred to Del Rio. Goodman came from Morton Texas and has wide experience in variety store operations. Mr and Mrs Goodman reside with small son in the Shirley Scales house on the Fort Davis highway.

Locals note visitors from Texas and Canada

Eddie McCarson of Comstock Texas and former Sul Ross student visits Al pine to watch Baylor Sul Ross baseball. His son Red McCarson plays for the Lobo Baseball squad. Mrs S E Bunton and Wiley of Del Rio visit Terry Bunton and Mrs Sam Bunton. Also in town are Mr and Mrs L C Brock of Toronto Canada. The rocks arrive Wednesday and stay two weeks. Mr and Mrs Woodrow Epper son Kerrville arrive for the American Legion Convention. Mrs R Myrtle White leaves New York March 13 for Rosy Land tour ending in Europe. Mrs Hill reports her daughter Jean and two sons reached Tokyo safely.

First Methodist Church to Host Wollege Event and Speakers

A Sunday afternoon program at the First Methodist Church begins at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Carl Lawson will lead, with Sul Ross State College choral group providing music. Dan Logan will direct, Joyce will be principal speaker, and attendees include Bill Cowell Doyle Riley and Jimmy Matlock. Attendees from Safe Way Store in Alpine join the 20th annual Employees Association meeting in El Paso.

All-Lone Star Conference picks include two Sul Ross men

Sul Ross State and Stephen F. Austin State each place two players on the all league basketball team as chosen by coaches with Southwest Texas State taking the fifth spot. C. L. Nix and James Bitton from Sul Ross are unanimous selections along with Bobby Roberts of Southwest in the top squad.

Churches Announce Easter Services in Alpine and Marathon

Alpine and Marathon churches announce a suite of Easter observances. An Easter cantata will be presented at First Methodist Church in Alpine at 11 am Sunday March 25 with choir and soloists. A Good Friday service is set for March 30 at 7 pm by the Ministerial Alliance in the Presbyterian Church and an Easter Sunrise Service at Kobernot Field 6:30 am April 1. Holy Week Holy Mass schedules include Palm Sunday processions in Alpine and Marathon, Good Friday services, and multiple Masses Easter Sunday across Our Lady of Peace Church Our Lady of Fatima Chapel and St Marys Church.

Texana Library To Be Dedicated At Sul Ross College

Marfa To Get Consul Office

The Mexican Consulate office in Alpine will close at the end of March and reopen April 2 in Marfa under Jane Hotel management. The arrangement covers West Texas counties. Tapia praises Alpine residents and expects continued good relations from Marfa. Also noted is Charles Oblund of the University of Arizona joining the Reserve Officers Training Corps Senior Division.

Rudy Valenzuela Named VFW Commander Here

Rudy Valenzuela was elected president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7207 succeeding Robert Salgado. New officers will be installed April 6. Other officers named include Sal vice-commander Joe Martinez junior vice- commander Pablo Rojo and more.
