Texas publication law aids public access to state spending

The legislature passed a new law with penalties for officials who fail to publish required reports. A printed “publication laws” book was approved by the attorney general and became effective last April. Cities must publish itemized receipts and expenditures, hearings notices, counties and schools must do the same, and quarterly fund reports are required for county commissioners. The Texas economy commission will propose further efficiency measures for state government.
