Rain covered a wide Big Bend area last Thursday night and Friday, delivering from half to two inches. Alpine area totals reached 1.81 inches, with Willoughby and Vic Pierce ranches reporting up to two inches. Other spots such as Kokernot, O2, and Pruett ranches recorded lesser amounts, filling tanks for the first time in 20 years. Campbell Guy West aged 58 a government trapper from Valentine was killed in a late Friday auto crash 82 miles south of Marta on Highway 67. Driver Jimmy Rhodes aged 23 of Valentine sustained minor injuries. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Valentine with burial at Valentine Cemetery. West survived by his widow and two children Jean and Neva Jo. Bertha Lentz left for South Bend Ind after a sister in law C F Lentz died. she will stay a few days after attending the funeral.

The city commission approved the Del Rio and Winter Garden Telephone Co rate increase to take effect April 1 after a hearing Monday night. Company officials cited ongoing plant improvements and a $37,000 recent outlay, with the expected 5 percent return. Rates shown include $7.50 monthly for business single lines and $4 for residential single lines plus 15 percent federal tax.
Sul Ross hosts European democratic leader exiled from Communist nations Tavetan Litov Tuesday March 27 under National Committee for a Free Europe. Litov, Bulgarian church teacher and former editor, will speak at Alpine event. he has long served Bulgaria’s Protestant church organizations and youth groups. Dr. and Mrs. V G Isvekov of Houston spent the weekend in Alpine.

Activities reviewed include a tenderfoot investiture by Sandy Sanderford. A district neckerchief slide contest crowned John Votan Henry Martin and Bob Bennett as top finishers. Future events and contests announced with a first aid event set for the courthouse lawn in Alpine. Next roundtable scheduled for Fort Davis April 10.
Alpine prepares for an exhibition as a special train brings the Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Browns to Kokernot field on Friday March 30 at 2 pm. The teams depart El Paso at 5 am and arrive in San Antonio the same day. Local youths Villalva and Gallego face burglary and robbery charges in county jail.

Fort Davis reports the Jeff Davis County Courthouse has a new coat of paint on the lower story and public rooms. The renovation includes interior work from floor to ceiling and gold lettered signs for offices. The second floor may receive attention soon, with older residents unsure when the interior last received a full repaint.
