West Texas Librarians Gather for Sul Ross Workshop

Nearly 200 librarians and teachers from across West Texas attend the 2nd Workshop for Librarians at Sul Ross. The two day event features talks, small groups, and informal panels with representatives from the Texas Education Agency and the Texas State Library. Registration opens Friday at 9 a.m. in the Fine Arts Building.

City Hauls 8-Inch Pipe From Del Rio to Alpine

Mayor W. E. Lockhart says forty lengths of eight inch cast iron water pipe are hauled daily from Del Rio to Alpine by the city trailer truck. The pipe runs from the Sun Rosy State College water tank to City mains at Central School. The operation faces minor breakdowns solved by the crew with W. T. Johns inspecting pipe and Werner Hollis overseeing trucking.

Sul Ross Lobos Open 1959 Season With Losses to Baylor SMU

Sul Ross hosts Southwestern Oklahoma after opening with four straight defeats, as Baylor and SMU swept the Lobos in Waco and Dallas. Key players Argil Wotraw Freddy Davis Warren McCarson slugged the team, while pitcher Herman Hudson is set to start Friday with Shields and Cox on Saturday. Colorado visit follows midweek.

George Baker Laid To Rest Noted Texan Sheep Rancher 82

Alpine lands third NAIA baseball tournament at Kokernot Field

Officials of the NAIA informed Sul Ross College and coach Ray Van Cleef that the third annual NAIA baseball tournament will be at Kokernot Field in Alpine. Tentative dates are June 3 to 6 for an eight team event with colleges from across the United States. Sul Ross won the first NAIA tournament and San Diego State won last year.

Bargain Book Tickets For Cowboys Ball Games

Pre season bargain book tickets for Alpine Cowboys baseball go on sale Monday March 23 at Kakernot Field and Baker Jewelers. A book of 15 general admission tickets costs 10 dollars reducing admission to 66 cents per ticket. Opening day tickets go on sale April 1 for the April 27 opener against the San Angelo Pirates at home.

Plane Crashes Sound Barrier Over Alpine

Residents of Alpine heard a sonic boom at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday when a high flying jet crashed the sound barrier. No windows were broken, but the explosive sound caused people to rush from their homes as a thin vapor trail marked the jet’s path.

Sul Ross Girl In Critical Condition After Wreck

Rodanna Harrison an 18 year old Sul Ross freshman remained unconscious and in critical condition at Brewster Memorial Hospital after her car on U S Highway 90 left the curve at Antelope Lodge struck a suard post and overturned. The accident occurred about 9 15 p m Wednesday March 11 Annie Jo Estes 20 of Lamesa had minor injuries Rodanna is daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Harrison of Grand Falls whose family rushed to Alpine. Her brother Roddy a Texas A M student also came to the hospital.

Alpine Buck Band sweeps ILCA ratings in Odessa contest

Alpine High band under Bandmaster Leland Schultz earned eight division 1 ratings and four second ratings at the Interscholastic League contest in Odessa High School. Second division soloists included Warnock Clouse Williams. first division ratings went to Cowell Holman Wright Williams McBride Burgess Stringer King. Next contest in April at Odessa will involve the full band.

Lyons H Lockhart Dead at 59 Rancher and Alum of Uvalde

Lyons H Lockhart 59 retired ranchman died Friday in Alpine. A Pearsall born, he grew up in Uvalde graduating in 1907. He ranch ed near Brackettville for 20 years before moving to Alpine in 1951. Survived by his wife a son Lyons H Lockhart Jr a Texas Tech student a daughter Mrs W G Smart four sisters.
