Main Street tunnel link to hospital urged by Alpine officials
The Alpine city commission assured American Legion leaders that the $750000 tunnel on Main Street between Fort Davis Highway and the Brewster County Memorial Hospital will open to traffic soon. Post commander Jimmy Eichholtz and Sherman Newsom argued the route would save miles for Alpine and Fort Davis residents, especially for emergency trips from Central School. W. E. Lockhart noted a 4 inch water line must be relocated and a creek crossing built, with water shutoffs and a $1000 valve installation in Alpine required.

The Alpine Public School Board on Tuesday night approved three-year contracts for nine teachers: Elizabeth Bledsoe Ann Harlow Erin Shearer Kathryn Walker Ida Mae Williams Lucile Clanton Catherine Jo Etheridge Frankie Fowlkes and Chelsea Reed. One-year contracts were given to Rebecca Terry and R M Brown due to shifting road assignments. The board reviewed NEA and James B Conant recommendations for gifted high school curricula, noting Alpine already aligns with many ideas. Reg Votan will retire after the April 5 election. A reception is planned April 12 and a five year textbook committee was approved. Visitors Jimmy Logan and Ray Morrow attended as new school board candidates.

Power Line To Sunny Glen Planned By City and WTA
West Texas Utilities will begin construction of a power line to Sunny Glen to supply electricity for water well pumps. City officials met with WTA and approved a 50 year franchise in exchange for the line with the city providing easements. A temporary arrangement shields WTA from blame if Section 23 easement location is protested after July 1, 1958.

President Eisenhower authorized 745000 to build a tunnel on the Rio Grande road between Headquarters and Boquillas in Big Bend National Park. U S Representative Rutherford says congressional action is needed while Supt Miller confirms contractual authority to begin work in the current fiscal year. The Bureau of Public Roads will handle bids as a park survey team completes the road tunnel study. This raises Big Bend spending to about 3,000,000 in a year.

Light snow and sleet dusted Alpine and nearby ranches early yesterday, aiding range moisture between Alpine and Fort Davis. Alpine and Miles Pierce Ranch east measured about one inch, while McIntyre Morrow Ranch west and Meriwether Ranches north and south saw light falls. J D Snapper Gilbreath 43 was killed when his car hit a bridge abutment in Houston on Friday afternoon March 7 authorities say he apparently fell asleep at the wheel. He was buried in Elm Grove Cemetery Alpine May have worked with Big Bend Sportsman's Club and Great American Insurance Co. He was born November 1 1914 in Dublin Texas and survived by his wife two daughters two sons and his parents. He was a member of Alpine Masonic groups. He operated a service station in Alpine before joining the insurance firm.

Alpine High Stage Band Takes Second At Brownwood Contest
Alpine High School Stage Band finished second among 10 Class A bands at the Brownwood meet held Friday. Cross Plains won with a score of 96 while Alpine posted 96, 95, and 94 from three judges. Bandmaster Leland Schultz’s first Brownwood trip and the event drew 10 Class A, 12 AA, 9 AAA, and 11 AAAA bands.

The Alpine Volunteer Fire Department will get 240000 gallons of water annually free starting April 1 1958. The City Commission approved the measure at a Monday meeting with Fire Chief J C Cooley presenting. If usage exceeds the allotment at 20 cents per 1000 gallons will apply. eligibility requires regular drill and alarm response.

Gulf Station Construction Starts at Harrison and 90
Construction began Tuesday on the new Gulf station at the corner of Harrison and Hiway 90 across from Sul Ross College. Jim Corder of Marfa won the contract with J. E. Gray Jr. as assistant. W. L. Benz will supervise. The station features a porcelain enamel exterior two bays and six pumps. Operations expected within 90 days.

County Offers 3000 To Aid Runway Paving
Brewster County Commissioners Court approves a 3000 grant toward paving the Alpine municipal airport if the City of Alpine matches. Roy Fulcher Pioneer Brewster County Resident Laid To Rest
Funeral services for Roy War nock Fulcher longtime Brewster County resident were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gene Brice officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. Fulcher, born March 14, 1901 in Runnels County, Texas, was found dead by hanging at a water well rig near Nolland Shuler’s home after noon Sunday March 9. An inquest was conducted by Justice of the Peace W. G. Fielder. He had been in ill health and despondent, survived by two daughters Corene Turner and Patricia Weddle, a son Bruce Fulcher, a stepdaughter Lola Ann Chichester, a stepson Lt. Col. Francis Williams, and three brothers and three sisters. Out-of-town mourners came from Fort Stockton, Balmorhea, Lajitas, Terlingua, Alpine and Hobbs New Mexico. Pallbearers listed.

The Alpine school board election is set for April 5 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce Building. Two seats are open with candidates Jimmy Logan Jim Francois an incumbent and Ray Morrow. Retiring member is Reg Wotan. Absentee ballots available March 17 to April 1 at the county clerk's office.
