A satirical note mockingly frames Edward Walsh Mehren proposing 2, 7 and 12 cent coins to save billions, with coffee price jokes and coin nicknames. It also prints a German letter begging assistance for a Crimmitschau print shop, ending with a quip about tax deadlines and “pound of flesh.”
The Weather bureau station at Sul Ross college reports daily highs and lows for the past week. Arch 6 recorded 34/18, arch 7 66/41, arch 8 70/34, arch 9 62/39, arch 10 67/39, March 11 53/10, and returns 50/20.
Fort Davis citizens organize a boys camp with $10,000 from 25 residents. Land in Hospital canyon, site of the original post, will host a kitchen dining hall and tents. Planned two five week sessions from June 11 and July 20 with activities including crafts rifle archery swimming horseback riding and trips to McDonald Observatory Alpine Carlsbad Caverns and Big Bend National Park.
Sul Ross College in Alpine released the fall honor roll showing Carrol Dean Etheridge and Rose Anna Smith in the top marks, joined by Lucille Kempen Frank Daugherty Susan Walker Mary Eloise Pickering John F Woodward and Mary Ellen Gard in various upper percentiles.
City offices report building permits issued in Alpine since February 1 total about 30000 dollars. Excludes work under the new ordinance. Sgt. John Wardlaw who had served three years in Japan with the Army Air Force visited his wife Wilma Mae Young and their small son then left Tuesday for a new assignment at Richmond California Accompanied by his wife and child they traveled together back to the west coast.

A Red Cross field representative will conduct an instructor course in First Aid at Sul Ross College from April 5 to 9. Eligible are current advanced First Aid certificate holders. advanced class sessions run March 15 week. Interested entrants should meet Miss Lutie Britt, Brewster County First Aid chair, in the Physical Education department.
Alpine High School reveals two year football contracts with Ozona and Big Lake to cover 1948 and 1949 schedules. Coach Travis L. Cook notes potential six man play in 1949 if enrollment declines or classification changes. The 1948 schedule lists Marfa Fabens Sanderson Ozona Crane Big Lake Fabens Sanderson Marfa with open date on Halloween. Conference games: Marfa Fabens Sanderson. The 1949 slate mirrors 1948 with alternating venues.
Bids to be opened May 7 for construction of 30 tile cottages to house Sul Ross students on campus between the present cottages and the highway. A move of the officers club to campus and conversion into a student union is planned, financed by bonds totaling 175000 dollars.
Alpine chamber of commerce directors approved granting a junior chamber of commerce charter for men ages 21 to 35. A meeting at the Holland hotel Monday at 7:30 p.m. will elect temporary officers and form a constitution and membership committee. The JC aims to join an international network spanning about 20 countries.
A district court jury acquitted Manuel Robledo of Alpine on a murder charge for the fatal April 1946 stabbing of Victoriano Rodriguez. Defense argued self defense as Will A. Morris Jr. of San Antonio represented the defendant. The trial drew a full courtroom from Monday to Friday.
The tail end of a blizzard moved into the Panhandle and Davis mountains, driving temps down to 10 to 12 degrees in the Alpine region. A fog and sleet accompanied the frigid air, with sun returning by press time. The prior freeze damaged early fruit, mainly plums and peaches, but most trees were not blooming. A few icy roads led to minor accidents. two men survived a wreck near a bridge on U.S. 67, north of Alpine.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 oclock at the Presbyterian church for Walter D. Starns 41 brother of Mayor L B Starns who died of a heart attack in Marathon last Saturday. He was a Southern Pacific telegraph operator stationed recently at Marathon and formerly at Schulenberg. Surviving are his widow Frances and two children Laura May and David of Marathon, his mother Mrs W T Starns of Hanceville Alabama, four sisters and three brothers including L B Starns of Alpine. Interment followed at Elm Grove cemetery with the Masonic lodge in charge.
Two 300 yard matched races with $1000 purses each are set at Fairview park near Alpine on Highways 90 and 67. Races feature Teno owned by Earl McElroy Alpine Sky Chief owned by Lewenthal Bros Little Hickory owned by Gene Benson Alpine and General Patton owned by Lewenthal Bros. The events start at 2 30 p m with a grand opening Feb 29 drawing racing fans.
Mrs. Edith Caldwell came back last Saturday after spending a week in Lamesa, ending her brief trip with no reported incidents or events.
Sul Ross college releases the 1948 football schedule with non conference games against Sam Houston State Teachers College Daniel Baker Eastern New Mexico Panhandle A M New Mexico A and M University of Corpus Christi Texas A I Adams State New Mexico State Teachers and St Michael's University. Directors Pollock and Pierce note only three seniors depart and anticipate a strong season in a shifting conference landscape including Pioneer conference talks.
Henry A. Coffield a 54 year old Maria ranchman and civic leader announced his candidacy for the state senate representing the district. A World War I veteran, former Marfa mayor, and longtime rancher in Jeff Davis and Presidio counties he pledges honest representation and broad citizen participation.
Mr and Mrs Gilmer Morriss of Alpine announced the purchase of about 20000 acres in Edwards county. Included are Diamond Bar 7400 acres Whittier and Grooms 8500 acres and Diamond 4300 acres. The deal includes 4000 goats and 1000 sheep for a total of 500000 dollars. The Morrisses, longtime ranchers in Brewster County, will move to Diamond Bar to live, said to be among the finest Edwards county ranches.
Tax collector reports only 384 1948 motor license plates issued to date with over 1200 vehicles remaining in Brewster County for registration before April 1. Owners are urged to secure plates early to avoid last minute rush as offices anticipate heavy traffic.
Eight candidates now seek city offices with three incumbents not seeking re election. Mayoral candidate John W Gillett joins commission contenders H G Allman Frank McCollum Jack Cross and Sam D Thomas as the filing closes on the last day. Voters pick a new mayor and two commissioners on April 6 in a lively race.
Frances DeMond, mezzo soprano, appears as the season finale of Big Bend Municipal Concert Assn. at Sul Ross auditorium on April 15 at 8 p.m. Her life story and voice have drawn praise from John Charles Thomas Marion Anderson Rise Stevens and Lily Pons. She overcame poliomyelitis and began serious vocal study, earning endorsements from Ethel Lenginski and promoter William Z Rozan.
The 77-B district votes to move the Interscholastic League track and field meet from Alpine to Marfa after a Tuesday session in the Marfa director general’s office. Events run April 9 to 17 with tennis on Friday April 9 and junior and senior track on Saturday. Attendees include J E Gregg Marfa. C G Matthews. Bodie Hunter. E Bland Marathon. J Prude Fort Davis.
