First White Man in Davis Mountains Traced
Fort Davis March 5 The first white man to enter the Davis Mountains is identified as Antonio de Espejo a Spanish lieutenant who traveled in 1588 while searching for two friars. His route via Limpia Canyon and Keesey Canyon is traced by archaeologists from Sul Ross and the School of American Research noting the route to the new Davis Mountains State Park site.

Legion Plans Big Bend meet for 800 visitors
Big Bend post No 79 and the Auxiliary prepare to host about 800 visitors for the district convention on the 6th and 7th of next month. A school band contest with nine bands from Aline, Sanderson, El Paso High, Aus High, El Paso, Monahans, Wink, Midland, McCamey, and Iraan is planned, averaging 50 members each. Housing is being arranged with help from Lions Club, chamber of commerce, PTA, and the college. Alpine residents are urged to list rooms. A big parade and three dances are also scheduled, including events at Sul Ross Auditorium and venues around town.

Back Tax Work Continues Under Delinquent Moratorium
Brewster county deputy tax collector Milton Gilmer informs residents that March 15 is the final date for delinquent taxes without penalties or interest. The 1934 taxes are exempt from the moratorium, with penalties rising from 1 to 8 percent and interest up to 6 percent by June 20, 1938, for unpaid amounts.

Oil Well Drilling Advances In Alpine Marfa Area Tests
Drilling continues on nearly all test wells in the Alpine and Marathon region with several tests in progress. The Tonner-McIntyre well eight miles from Alpine reaches about 2125 feet despite crevices. The Jones-Coffield test on the Jones-Coffield ranch west of Marfa nears ah feet with drifting underway. The King-Franklin test on the Gage ranch near Marathon faces water shutoff problems but shows promise according to Mr King. Casing is set to depth around 650 feet at the Decte ranch near Marathon with water encountered. The Storey et al well in Green Valley south of Alpine is shut down as a new rig arrives to begin operations within 10 days.

Brown Funeral Attended by Many in Brewster County
People from across the region gathered last Thursday to honor George A. Brown who died in an El Paso hospital. Episcopal rector Rev. M. J. Swift officiated at services, with interment at Elm Grove cemetery. A large procession of cars followed the casket to the final resting place. active pallbearers included Wells McTyre, Bruce Duncan, Dr. W. D. Craddock, G. W. Baines, Matt Smith, and Worth Prazer, all of Alpine.

U. S. baby bonds issued last Friday at the local post office come in denominations of 25, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 dollars with selling prices of 18.75, 9750, 154, 975, and 750 respectively. They mature ten years from purchase, redeemable after 60 days, and are registered in the purchaser’s name on the U S treasury books for protection against loss or destruction.

Youth Is Recovering After Accident Near Turney
H F Wolford a youthful transient who lost a foot under a freight car near his early last week is recovering satisfactorily this week. He was brought here for an operation after several days at Turney hospital, then moved to the county jail where he is cared for by the county. His father is expected to arrive this week to take the youth home. Parents reside in Sppery Rock, Pa.

Alpine tax payers urged to pay city taxes by March 15
The notice warns Alpine residents there are only eight days left to pay city taxes without penalties and interest. After March 15 a 10 percent penalty and 6 percent interest will be added to delinquent amounts, with further levies on unpaid taxes.
Court Session Ends With Two Local Boys Sentenced
Willie Cano and Luciano Kouriqu 22, local Mexican boys, received 60 days in jail each after pleading guilty to stealing cigarettes in district court. They must also pay for the cigarettes. The Cano boy had previously been given a five year suspended sentence for car theft. The February term adjourned Friday after sessions since February 18 and the grand jury adjourned after a ten sion with nine bills found.

935 Auto Plates Make Appearance

Big Bend park plan gains federal backing for Texas
Secretary Ickes recommends establishing a huge peace park in the Big Bend region of Texas. A proposed 1.5 million acre national park would span Brewster and Presidio counties, linking sites on both sides of the border with contributions from public and private donors. College Hill Well Pumps 100 Gallons A Minute On Test
Testing of the well on College Hill, formerly used by the college, has been completed by the city. It pumped around 100 gallons per minute in a 36 hour test with no indication of weakening. Arrangements are being made to tie it in with the reservoir on College Hill. The pumping had no effect on the flow of the well below the hill on Marathon road.
