Joe Ramirez 22 earns first lieutenant bars in the U S Marine Corps at Miami and plans to wed Helen Robinson in El Paso next month. John Burgoyne Ely, 86, earns a UCLA music BA. Barbecue, ball games and a grand fireworks display highlight Independence Day as Brewster County residents enjoy a packed program. Alpine Cowboys host Las Cruces All-Stars at Kokernot Field with repeats Sunday, plus dances by Marathon Post 5 miles south of town. Free barbecue Wednesday noon and two 7 inning games feature Lackland AFB and Fort Bliss outings. Fireworks costing 300 dollars light up the golf course area after dark, with post members guiding each segment of the program.
Alpine city officials urged higher water use citing ample supply and low rates. Current schedule charges 1 per 1000 for 0-3000 gallons, 40 per 1000 for 3001-10000, 50c per 1000 for 10001-20000, and 30c per 1000 thereafter. Dr. W E Lockhart stressed water revenue to meet obligations and noted Alpine’s rates compare favorably with many Texas cities. possible reduction after June 1958 with the Collie contract ending.
Construction of the Harvard College radio observatory at Cook Flat seven miles northwest of Fort Davis progresses with a poured concrete pier foundation for a 28-foot antenna. Elmer Deven drew plans for the pet and the steel-sheathed 24 by 30 foot housing. Charles Peters of Alpine handles the contract. Dr. Allen Maxwell leads the project from Cambridge. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Goldstein arrived to assist. Mrs. Goldstein handles office work. An office is in the former Hotel Limpia, remodeled by J. C. Duncan Jr. The site was chosen for its radio quiet and basinlike topography. The observatory hopes to be operational by September.
Alpine Garment Factory will move to Morrison on North Street this weekend. The plant, now 25 workers with 21 sewing machines, aims to ship 300 dozen children's boxer shorts within two weeks. The board plans a $1 per hour wage once production goals are met and stock certificates valued at 10 dollars each will be sent to investors next week.

Alpine rancher Miles Pierce, a leading Rambouillet breeder in the Southwest, announced a cattle sale this week due to drought. He sold 80 grown cows, 50 calves and three bulls to Billy and Ralph Meriwether, retaining 20 yearling heifers.
The editorial lauds County Judge Felix McGaughy for pledging to follow the law in handling county funds and highlights Article 396 of the Texas Penal Code. It calls for annual affidavits from the county judge, commissioners, and clerk verifying cash and assets were counted and inspected, with publication of the county treasurer’s quarterly report if a newspaper is published in the county. It warns fines of 25 to 500 dollars for noncompliance.
Pilot Club announces its musical event Fortunes For Fancy will open Monday night with rehearsals completed. A baby contest will conclude Tuesday.
The Draft Board office will relocate from the Asa Jones Building to the Big Bend Abstract Co. building, effective July 1, announced by board chairman J. M. Alderson. Ruth Garnett serves as secretary. The notice also previews a Sul Ross College Auditorium show with dress rehearsals Saturday night and performances next Monday and Tuesday at 8 13 pm. The eight scene musical centers on a fortune teller plotting events involving Sheriff Fancy and his wife, with Betty Holland and Rev. Carl Lawson in key roles. A baby contest has 61 entries. prizes include a portable Singer sewing machine valued at 169.95, with winners announced at Morrison's window on Holland Avenue. Admission to the show is a donation of 1 for adults and 50 cents for children.
Alpine merchants announce three big sale days July 6 7 and 9 with hundreds of items at discount prices. The Big Bend Davis Mountains region residents will shop these Value Days promoted by the Chamber of Commerce retail merchandising committee. Alpine Avalanche and KVLF radio back the event with extensive advertising.
Testimony before the House Interior Committee this week reinforced continued support for mineral resource development in the nation. Arthur Flemming cited government obligation to develop conserve and utilize minerals while private industry drives production in Terlingua Brewster County with Lone Star Mercury and Terlingua Mercury Corp. active and others exploring. The domestic mercury program fixes a $225 floor with about 265 dollars per flask market price and runs through 1957 enabling industry expansion and government purchases up to 125000 flasks.
Pilot Bob West son of Mr and Mrs Massie West of Alpine and San Angelo was injured in a takeoff crash at Alpine Airport about 10 30 am Tuesday. Passenger Billy Renfro of Marfa was uninjured. Three Southwestern Bell Telephone Co crewmen aided West to Alpine hospital. West suffered chin and right foot injuries with stable condition. Witnesses include D K Wilson C E Watkins and H E Henderson. Also noted, R A Underwood Co bid low on Brewster County 220000 bond issue with 2 76 percent average interest. nine firms bid.
