An air show marked the graduation of 80 cadets at the Advanced Flying School. The group, from 40 states, received second lieutenants commissions as 36 twin engine trainers flew in precise formations. Lt. Ray gave a brief speech before Col. Hoyle and others presented wings and commissions, with a veteran in attendance.

Youth Killed in West Main Knife Incident near Granada Theater
Joe Molinar aged 17 died minutes after a knife wound in an Alpine area altercation on West Main avenue near the Granada theater. Inez Carrillo, also about 17, is jailed on murder charges. The fight reportedly began over a girl. Molinar died en route to focal hospital after a four inch blade pierced his chest. An examining trial in Justice Rayond Garnett's court started but not completed. Carrillo remains jailed awaiting trial. Molinar was son of Vicente Molinar and wife and was buried Tuesday morning.

Alpine Masons Name New Officers at Recent Meet
George Koury was elected worshipful master of Alpine Lodge No. 766 A F and A M at its regular meeting last Thursday. He succeeds Douglas McMurrey. Brewster County Falls Short on War Bond Purchases
Brewster County lagged in buying war bonds and stamps during the first half of June. G. W. Baines, chairman of the County War Finance committee, reported that purchases in Marathon and Alpine totaled 8714.15 dollars, well under the 20500 dollar quota. He urged residents to boost purchases in the month's final half to meet the goal.

Showers End as Hot Sun Scorches Grass in Alpine Area
Local weather notes that after a week of frequent showers in the Alpine region a prolonged dry spell followed. Only Sunday’s rain of 1.0 inch was recorded while a prior Friday drop measured 2.5 inches at Sul Ross. The Highland Big Bend area saw varying moisture with some dry patches north of Alpine and between Alpine and Hovey. June brings total rain to 2.0 inches, year-to-date 3.65 inches, about 2.3 inches below year-end averages.

Reductions In Prices of Meat Are Now In Effect
Meat price roll back by the OPA took effect Monday with cuts ranging from two cents to 11 cents per pound. Cured and processed pork follow July 5. Typical cuts show Good T-bone 10 cents, Round steak 5 cents, Chuck roast 3 to 5 cents, ground beef 2 to 8 cents. Slaughterers began June 14 wholesalers June 17. Subsidy program funds the roll back.

Big Bend Baptist Meeting At Marfa Church
The Big Bend Baptist association held its meeting at the Marfa Baptist church with nine pastors present. New pastors from Fort Davis and Preshiro attended for the first time, and messages were given by Rev. Ward Fort Stockton Rev. Adams Sanderson Rev. Gathright Fort Davis and Rev. Wittner Alpine. The Presidio pastor led the devotional as WMU board meetings occurred alongside the pastors and lay leaders. The next gathering is set for Sanderson in July.

Pecos County Reaches Deal On 1967 Route Access
The Fort Stockton Pioneer reports a settlement between the State Highway Department and Pecos County Commissioners Court. The county will receive 10 000 dollars for right of way originally secured for U S highway 67 along the Santa Fe line from Fort Stockton to a grade crossing 29 miles away. A new route would shift 67 away from the railway toward Highway 290, trimming construction by about 10 miles and reducing drainage work costs. The agreement clears the way for completing right of way on the new route, though no immediate action is expected.

Air Line for Westex Area Seems Certain
Air service for Alpine area appears likely as Braniff Airways moves toward a temporary certificate for routes from San Antonio to El Paso via Uvalde Del Rio Fort Stockton and Alpine Marta. The plan includes El Paso to Houston via San Antonio Austin and Amarillo to Denver with cooperation from Alpine officials and local agencies.

Logan Sells Interest in Alpine Wool Co to Dan Ritter

Two Marfa Men Die in Truck Collision Near Van Horn
H C Bourland age 49 and C D Logan age 35 both of Marfa were killed last Wednesday when the truck they rode in struck a cow on the highway near Allamore twelve miles west of Van Horn and overturned. Bourland was killed instantly and Logan died later at a Van Horn hospital. They were en route to El Paso when the accident occurred. Bourland was a partner in a wholesale produce business with C C Grubbs. Logan had lived in Marfa only a short time.
