Two in Fatal Crash Wanted for Burglary
Two men involved in a fatal traffic accident near Mara last Sunday morning are wanted on burglary charges in Georgia. Sheriff Carl Williams reports Homer Eugene Rewis Jr. and Horace Jimmy Barfield, both of Vidalia, Ga., are sought for burglarizing Big John's Barn in Lyons. The crash occurred at 6 20 a m on U S Highway 90 west of Marathon killing Daniel Raymond Schoening 21 of Kamiah Idaho who was riding in a 1963 Ford station wagon occupied also by Rewis and Barfield. The other vehicle was a 1963 Chevrolet driven by Eliseo Calderon 34 of Valentine with Nelson Lewis 31 of Alpine. The injured were treated at Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Barfield was released from hospital and jailed. Lewis remains hospitalized under guard awaiting Georgia authorities.

City to spray mosquitoes in breeding areas citywide
City crews will spray mosquito breeding areas as soon as possible after council ordered action at Tuesday night meeting. Recent rains left standing water in creek beds and other places across town.
Airstrip plans to discuss Big Bend area meeting
Local, state, and federal officials will meet in the Big Bend area at 10 a.m. to address establishing an airstrip near the park. Mrs. Mary Etta Hargus of Baytown died June 17 after a long illness. Born 1882 in Banner Elk North Carolina she moved to Alpine in 1902 with husband Mack Hargus who died in 1952. Survived by three daughters one son one sister and many grandchildren. services held at First Methodist Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.

The Alpine City Council heard a plan to pursue public housing to ease a housing shortage for Sul Ross State College students especially married students. FHA officials and local architects outlined costs and timelines with completion 18 to 24 months after initiation and estimated units priced at 8000 to 10000 dollars each.

July Fourth Festivities Planned in Alpine
Alpine Jaycees announce a tentative July 4 program at Courthouse Centre with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. led by American Legion Big Bend Post No. 79, about 20 booths, rides and child entertainment, a 1:30 p.m. speech by State Rep. Gene Hendry, Miss Alpine at 2 p.m., baby contest at 3 p.m., plus a Nike Hercules missile from Fort Bliss and a National Space Agency exhibit. Local firms to close July 5 due to Independence Day on Sunday.

Sul Ross to Receive 3.5 Million for Two Years

City Council Adds Four-Way Stop At 7th Street and Avenue D
The council ordered four-way stop signs at the 7th Street and Avenue D intersection. Signs will replace the existing on 7th Street and add two more on Avenue D near the bridge. Alpine Fire Dept Members to Attend AGM Short Course
Cary Council may authorize four Alpine Volunteer Fire Dept members to attend the fireman's short course at Texas AGM College Station July 25. The city will spend up to 400 to defray expenses with Civil Defense sharing costs. Attendees include Bob Lee Paul Staeger J R Sohl and Bob Rains. Alonzo Hord Civil Defense director said the Alpine key insurance rate will be reduced by the training.

Housing project aims to rent units at set monthly rates
Housing units would rent from 40 to 50 dollars monthly. Private rentals in Austin and Lubbock ranged 80 to 90 dollars, Pace said. Council members present were Mayor Bill Winter, Homer Hudgins, C. D. Farley highlights Boys Ranch impact in Alpine breakfast
Cal Farley told Alpine citizens at the Holland Hotel breakfast that 1700 boys have been housed and educated at Boys Ranch near Amarillo over 26 years. The Amarillo ranch now cares for 334 boys with 15 graduates from high school last spring and 8 headed to college. Don Francois from Alpine is flourishing as a teacher there.
