A dedicatory service drew several hundred attendees as the new post office began operation after a move from the old quarters. The transition occurred Tuesday night after closing hours, causing no disruption to patrons.
Mayor Sterns recounts Alpine post office history from its 1983 Murphysville start in Presidio county. First postmaster William H. Slaughter. list includes Geddis and Darling before 1888 name change, then Hancock, Korte, Stewart, Hoornbeck, Durrell, Slight, Coleman, Allen, Turney as later postmasters. The new building sits on James Darling’s former home site, marking a half century since the renaming.
Bruce Duncan sold two more dogs from his pack to Dan Oliver of a Blue Arizona hunting resort for $100 apiece. He had sold three dogs last November at the same price, with such satisfaction that a second order followed. Duncan trains hounds to trail bear and panther attacking livestock. He has one female hound whose offerings have brought in a total of $1125.
J. D. Harris C A Gilley W M Meador and David Coleman Sul Ross student led a field that included G W Baines J E Burgess Jock Hord Joe Hord Jr Griffith Oates H G Watson Murphy Bennett Kenneth Johnson and Ray LaBeff. The Alpine Gelf club manager C Speedy Williams oversaw the event.
Stanley Jeffers, about 22, was jailed in Fort Davis after the death of highway worker Robert Cass, about 45, who was struck on the head and knocked unconscious on a west of Valentine job site. Cass died en route to El Paso, with Cass’s home listed as El Paso and a Marfa connection noted. Sheriff Walker arrested Jeffers. a preliminary hearing awaits District Attorney Alan R. Fraser’s availability amid Alpine Black trial.
Core Prestidge formerly of Ennis accepts a service department post with Brewster County Motors, the local Ford dealer. He brings about 15 years of Ford experience. His family plans to join him later.
A small twister wrecked a large barn on the H. L. Kokernot and Son Lionella ranch about 30 miles northeast of Alpine late last Thursday. Two ranch vehicles were destroyed when the barn collapsed on them. nearby trees were uprooted though the ranch house was undamaged. Rainfall eased water shortages across several ranches in the Glass Mountains region and south toward Alpine, with beneficial showers extending toward the Chisos Mountains.
C F Burling who has spent months under care at 5S P hospital and recent days with family in El Paso departed Tuesday for continued treatment at a Houston hospital.
W. M. Meador and Floyd R. Williams of the Alpine Golf club each scored a birdie and an eagle in recent weeks on the course. They received the Spring Sportsmen's Award, a pair of Duke of Dundee air conditioned briar pipes in an attractive case, plus an honor card detailing their feats. The card, signed by George R. Wilson, notes the award and extends congratulations.
Valentine residents petitioned the county commission for a vote on beer sales in Justice Precinct No. 4. County officers expect the election to be held early July with a definitive date to be announced.
Seventy five students faculty and friends of Sul Ross plan an eighth annual educational train trip to Chihuahua City Mexico departing at 6 30 a m next Saturday. Miss Stather Elliott reports registration closed. Palacios hotel will host Rossonians. Academic credit offered for those enrolled in first six weeks who complete attendance lectures and a July 6 report.
Mrs. Clara McKay of St. Paul admits owing $14 in a lawsuit seeking $14.01 but hires a lawyer to contest the extra cent. The case centers on the zdecent cent dispute as she pursues legal advice to challenge the claim.
The missing Alton Word family from Fort Davis was found in McCamey after leaving May be found by Sheriff Walker and others. A sister in law had indicated they worked on a farm in Uvalde county since May 30 and later arrived at Word's father home in McCamey.
Brewster County Motors announces a next week auto driving contest in Alpine with three cash prizes of 10, 7.50, and 5 dollars. Licensed drivers can enter for free. 60 horsepower Ford V-8s will be provided and fueled for a fuel-efficiency challenge on a fixed course.
Alpine Troop 41 members won both Honor Troop and Honor Table awards at the Rui dosa camp in Yucca council. The table award was relinquished to an El Paso troop due to policy limiting one pennant per group. Six scouts plus field executive Charles Wade attended the encampment: James Crawford, Robert Crawford, Billy Fielder, Harlan Smith, Hal Smith, and David Walker.

Felix Valenzuela a long time Terlingua constable was shot during a contraband liquor stop near Terlingua Brewster County. R L Cartledge justice of the peace and Mine manager wrestled with suspects while Hinojos fled toward the river with confederates aiding escape. Two Lopez brothers and Hinojos were implicated but at large. Valenzuela died from wounds and was buried at Terlingua Sunday.

Fourteen members were added to the First Baptist church in the revival that closed last Sunday. Three were baptized and the rest joined by letter from other churches. Rev. R. D. Pearson, who led the meeting, left for Macon Mississippi to pastor the First Baptist church there. The closing service drew a crowded house with strong spiritual power and four members were received. Baptismal services for those approved are set for next Sunday evening.

Francis Marion Black Jr. was found guilty of the murder of Marvin Dale Noblitt at Aqua Frio Springs and sentenced to death by jury in the Sird district court. The verdict followed a long trial with 12 jurors chosen from 58. defense motions and testimony related to the boy’s guardianship and the Black family.
