Fort Davis plans a June 25-26 music festival to mark the fort’s fifth year and raise funds for its purchase and preservation. Sponsored by the Fort Davis Historical Society with Mrs. Herman Dirks as chairman, the event will be under Hospital Canyon with a large area-wide invitation to 12 towns. The program features vocal instrumental and dance numbers, solos duets and groups, with sacred Sunday and secular Saturday evenings. A massed choir will sing America My Heritage and No Man is an Island. Costume ensembles evoke the old West, and Baldwin organ and piano are provided by Armstrong Music Co. of Odessa.

City Council Backs Paving Headed by Winter Hernandez
City council assigns Bill Winer and C. J. Hernandez to direct street repair and urban paving with Mayor Lockhart relieved of responsibility. The body rejected the mayor’s bond issue proposal for paving equipment and the $10 white warrant, citing normal city financing during lean months. Alpine School Board approved five new teacher assignments at Central School including Mrs. Mary Ola Kay replacing Delphene Young in 4th grade and Mrs. Diane Stillwell in girls physical education for grades 6 7 and 8. Billy Hicks to teach social science and assist with boys physical education, James Jackson to aid science and boys PE, Jerry Martin as assistant science instructor and high school coach replacing Clay Cade. Centennial may hire a man science major with PE minor. Alpine High needs a typing shorthand teacher and girls PE director. Board also approved Centennial 6th grade teacher, disapproved football field ticket booths, tabled driver education shop work and choral director, approved repairing Centennial patio, and noted no salary hikes this year with focus on raising salaries first.

Alpine Central PTA purchases an irrigation system for Central School campus to grass a 43 250 square foot area. Equipment from Southwestern Plast Pipe Co via Charles Borein costs about 1075 dollars. Installation includes 22 outlets with 14 sprinklers and will cover most of the grounds by Sept 1 1960.

Sul Ross State College to Compete in National Rodeo Finals
Sul Ross State College will join eight colleges at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Finals in Clayton New Mexico this weekend. Competitors include Robert House Jeff Smith Phil Sheridan Pete Lewis Billy James Marjorie Shaffin and Jim Bausch. The eight top teams and 96 cowboys contest for world championships in events like saddle bronc bareback bull riding calf and steer events along with goat tying and barrel racing. The Clayton Lions Club carnival and Western Swing Band will accompany rodeo week while the Rabbit Ear Roundup Association sponsors the finals attracting many fans.

J. O. Casparis Hurt In Del Rio Plane Crash
J O Casparis a famed flier and predator hunter in the Big Bend region sustained severe burns when his single engine plane forced landing two miles north of Del Rio airport. He is in a local hospital with burns to hands face and body and a possible broken nose. Casparis long noted for wildlife conservation and hunting from airplanes has appeared in national magazines and is credited with aiding predator control to restore antelope populations. Ray LaBeff transported Mrs Casparis to Del Rio after the crash.

Rutherford Pleads to CAB Over Trans Texas Suspension

Two Burglars Caught Here
Two men from Michigan were arrested in Alpine at 3 am Monday by Sheriff Jim Skinner and Texas Ranger Arthur Hill. Jack Farnsworth and Dennis Fay Pumfrey admitted to burglaries across Michigan and Texas, confessed to 10 to 12 burglaries, and were returned to Sanderson authorities.
