Party of T C U Geology Students on Field Trip in Big Bend

The Texas Christian University geology party leaves Fort Worth May 31 for a summer field trip to the Big Bend region of West Texas, camping in Hudspeth Presidio and Brewster counties near the Mexican border. They will map, study Creta ceous rocks, and examine mineral deposits in several basins, including Quitman Mountains and Marathon Basin, with aims tied to oil geology and regional stratigraphy.

Souther Seeks Re election To 1st District Post

Souther pledges continued work for the park and Sul Ross College as he seeks re election to the 1st legislative district warding support in the district. Couthorn, well known locally, vows full time service and cites experience in the legislature as key to aiding local needs. Griffith Oates, a Texas University attendee, has returned home to a hospital stay of a week or longer.

New Postoffice Near Completion in Alpine

Construction of Alpine's new post office is near finish. Lock bolts have been received and installed. Completion and turnover to the post office department is set for June 18, says W C Finch, construction superintendent. Move date from the old building not definite. dedicatory program planned with Seale chamber of commerce and city officials. Congressman Thomason may attend if able.

Alpine Fuel Company Sold To V B Oil This Week

Alpine Fuel Company is sold this week with Huffaker Strown Fuel Co. acquired by V B Oil. Dudley Littleton will manage the new operation while former owners Mr and Mrs Strown move to Cuero to run a farm. Carl Thain left last week for vacations in Los Angeles, joined by his uncle J C Thain at Hot Springs New Mexico for an extended stay.

Soil Conservationists Praise Range Control Efforts in Area

A group of ten soil conservationists toured the section this week to assess the Range Conservation program. After a Field Day at HL Koer ranch they asked County Agent Ernest Gibbens to arrange further tours and identify a suitable 35 acre ranch for a more detailed study of land slope vegetation and erosion. The study is expected to take about two weeks with inputs from Marshall, Fort Worth botanists Wollt and Taylor, Aunt Mulhollin, Worner, Angele, and J. M. Bird of Vernon.

Geographic Society Sees Park Pictures at Dallas Meeting

Several hundred attendees viewed color films of Big Bend National Park shown at the Texas Geographic Society annual meeting in Dallas. The displays featured the Sierra del Carmen range, Mexican frontier scenery, Santa Helena canyon, and local park sites shot by Rast B. Moore and John K. King Jr. with additional footage by Dr. Frank Miller of El Paso highlighting Chisos Mountains and park vegetation.

Harwell Returns as Express Agent in Local Office

G. G. Harwell, former Railway Express Agency agent, returns to manage the local office after a stint in San Angelo with the company. A. Tobias, who had taken over during Harwell's absence, resumes his former role at the agency's delivery end.

Supt Wood Makes Good Record Here in Alpine

Drury Wood, Alpine school superintendent for five years, resigned to take a similar post at Del Rio. He will pursue a master's degree in Austin this summer. Under his leadership the Alpine schools expanded, including a new 10 room building for Mexican children funded with WPA help. Old Central Ward bonds matured with $8700 annual interest paid. Finances praised for prudent spending. The district added 28 affiliated credits and started a music department.

Registration for Sul Ross Summer Session Started This Week

Sul Ross summer school enrollment opens with about 600 registered by Tuesday and ongoing enrollment over the weekend. The session runs to August 28 featuring an art colony directed by Xavier Gonzales, Chihuahua train excursion, Carlsbad Caverns trip, and lectures by noted scholars on Big Bend area topics.

Old Harvesting Cradle And Bicycle Added To Big Bend Museum

Fort Davis curator Roy Miller and Barry Scobee acquired a historic harvesting cradle from Barstow and a high wheel bicycle from New York for the West Texas Historical and Scientific Society museum in Alpine. The cradle, brought to Barstow in 1882 by W C Carson, evokes early alfalfa harvesting, and locals crowded to inspect the two relics now on display at the Fort Davis State Bank exhibit.

Water Carnival at Fort Stockton Opens Next Friday

Fort Stockton prepares for a large water carnival starting next Friday with a 10 AM parade. UT swimming team to perform two exhibitions daily and judge amateur events. fireman races, dances each night, and a West Texas revue with prizes. Temec Kidd Shows provide three daily rodeos along with rides and games at the Pecos county bathhouse complex.
