New Postoffice Near Completion in Alpine
Construction of Alpine's new post office is near finish. Lock bolts have been received and installed. Completion and turnover to the post office department is set for June 18, says W C Finch, construction superintendent. Alpine Fuel Company is sold this week with Huffaker Strown Fuel Co. acquired by V B Oil. Dudley Littleton will manage the new operation while former owners Mr and Mrs Strown move to Cuero to run a farm. Carl Thain left last week for vacations in Los Angeles, joined by his uncle J C Thain at Hot Springs New Mexico for an extended stay.

Soil Conservationists Praise Range Control Efforts in Area
A group of ten soil conservationists toured the section this week to assess the Range Conservation program. After a Field Day at HL Koer ranch they asked County Agent Ernest Gibbens to arrange further tours and identify a suitable 35 acre ranch for a more detailed study of land slope vegetation and erosion. The study is expected to take about two weeks with inputs from Marshall, Fort Worth botanists Wollt and Taylor, Aunt Mulhollin, Worner, Angele, and J. M. Bird of Vernon.

Drury Wood, Alpine school superintendent for five years, resigned to take a similar post at Del Rio. He will pursue a master's degree in Austin this summer. Under his leadership the Alpine schools expanded, including a new 10 room building for Mexican children funded with WPA help. Old Central Ward bonds matured with $8700 annual interest paid. Finances praised for prudent spending. The district added 28 affiliated credits and started a music department.

Registration for Sul Ross Summer Session Started This Week

Old Harvesting Cradle And Bicycle Added To Big Bend Museum
Fort Davis curator Roy Miller and Barry Scobee acquired a historic harvesting cradle from Barstow and a high wheel bicycle from New York for the West Texas Historical and Scientific Society museum in Alpine. The cradle, brought to Barstow in 1882 by W C Carson, evokes early alfalfa harvesting, and locals crowded to inspect the two relics now on display at the Fort Davis State Bank exhibit.
