Powell Radio Shop Joins Photofact Library

Jack Powell owner of Powell Radio and TV Shop at 912 W. Holland Alpine now has a Sams Photofact Service Data Library. The library holds a Photo fact folder for every television radio or phonograph model since 1950 and provides complete wiring and parts information. The Alpine installation ranks among the few between San Antonio and El Paso and makes Powell’s store one of the best equipped in West Texas.

Dick Riddle Pioneer Big Bend cattleman dies on Kokernot 06 Ranch

Richard K. Riddle 73 longtime Big Bend cattleman was found dead at his Kokernot 06 Ranch home near the old post office ruins in Limpia Canyon. Funeral services were held in Livingston Chapel with Rev. Robert Baird officiating. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery. He previously worked as foreman for W W Tumey and later for H L Kokernot 06 Ranch. He is survived by a sister and many nieces and nephews. Local social notes mention visiting relatives from Ohio and a student from TCU Fort Worth returning home for summer term.

Mrs Patric Savage Receives Her PhD at Rice University

Mrs Patric Savage received the PhD in philosophy from Rice University at June 3 commencement. Jack Savage of Iloustua earned the degree. Mrs Savage is a Rice faculty member. She studied French literature on a Fulbright in Paris and Grenoble in 1957 58. She is daughter of Paul V Hill and Mrs Hill of Alpine. Mr and Mrs Hill and Mrs Hill's sister Miss Margaret Starth of Denver are visiting South Texas after the ceremonies.

AHS Grad Named Top Student At University Medical School

Dr. B D van Josan son of Mrs Marie D Van Fossan of Alvin Texas was elected president of the Student American Medical Association at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston for the coming year. He was installed May 3 in Galveston and attended the national meeting in Los Angeles May 4 4. He serves as consultant biochemist at John Sealy Hospital clinical laboratories and as instructor in pathology. He won the Mu Delta Honorary Medical Service Society Scholarship for top junior class student and will have his name placed on a campus plaque. A Alpine High School and Sul Ross State College graduate he earned his PhD from the university in 1964.

Hail and Rain Bring Mixed News Across Big Bend

Rain has arrived in parts of Big Bend Country easing drought but hail damaged homes and fences in areas from Dryden to Marathon. Wells and tanks filled, creeks ran, and some ranches north of Alpine finally received moisture. Notable rains hit Pope, Dove Mountain, and Delmar Collins ranches, while several ranchers reported hopeful green-ups and continued dry spells elsewhere.

Balloon Passes Over Alpine Area at Dawn

Residents in Alpine and nearby areas watched a Navy cosmic ray balloon pass westward yesterday at a height between 50 000 and 60 000 feet traveling up to 35 miles an hour. It was expected to descend near Luling early yesterday morning. B C Graves, former Sal Ross State College coach, received his PhD from the University of Texas.

Alpine Mayor cites census error boosting enrollment claim

Mayor W. Lockhart stated the 1900 census data is flawed, arguing Alpine’s population is higher than official figures. M. P. Slover disputes recent reports of enrollment drops, proposing adjustments that imply growth, and urges infrastructure and industrial development to attract residents. The mayor emphasizes paving, garbage disposal, sewers, utilities, and water development to support growth.

Yunaammavay Anthony takes post as minister of St. James Episcopal Church, arriving with wife and son David. He conducts services this day as his permanent assignment begins, with ordination set for Friday at 10 30 am. Anthony also serves St Pauls in Marfa. The family resides at the rectory in Alpine and his mother Mrs T C Anthony also joins them. A visiting group from Big Lake and Stanton spent time with relatives at the Park.

Dukes Open 3-Game Series at Alpine Tonight

The Albuquerque Dukes travel to Alpine to start a three game series after a two game sweep of the Coyboys in Albuquerque last weekend. Jose Santiago is slated to pitch for Albuquerque while Bob Carlson or Chuck Harless will start for Alpine. Carlson has been named Sophomore League Player of the Month for May, earning an engraved wristwatch from Topps Chewing Gum Co.

Pecos Beats Inns In II Innings 7-6

Pecos defeats Inns in a shortened two inning game to 7-6 at home. Viel Hernandez pitched for Alpine, James Thom started for Pecos with Hinojos finishing. Nilo Minjares went 3-4 with a triple for the Internationals, while Frank Hernandez had three hits for Alpine and Rodriguez led Pecos. The Internationals host the Van Horn Stars at Ramos Field Sunday at 2:30 PM.

Mrs Emma O Dell Is Buried In Alpine

Funeral services were held Monday in Alpine for Mrs Emma Harrell O Dell former Emma Mangum of Mason. She died Friday in Big Spring of a heart attack at age 70. Survived by three sisters and three brothers. She lived in Alpine four years.

Sul Ross hosts intercollegiate field geology program

Sul Ross State College in Alpine runs a summer field geology program with Lamar Tech students. Two professors lead groups of 20 or more students spending four to five days weekly in the field, with meals at the dining hall and labs and library use on campus. President Wildenthal notes plans to expand the field school to other Texas colleges, signaling strong community and economic benefits.
