Terrific Hail Storm Deluges Alpine Area

A severe hail storm struck Alpine and surrounding areas around 6 p.m. yesterday with hail as large as golf balls. Heavy rains followed as windows shattered and trees were damaged. The NAIA baseball game between Sul Ross State College and Southern Illinois ended moments after the hail began, Illinois prevailing 5 to 0.

Owens Visits Alpine High Campus by Navy Graduate

Andy Owens, 1954 Alpine High graduate and son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Owens of Alpine, visited the Alpine High campus this week. He recently returned from over four years of United States Navy service including a six month Pacific and Orient tour and has entered Sul Ross College to pursue a bachelor's degree.

Wells On Roberts and Producing 200 GPM for City

City officials report Roberts No. 2 well in Sunny Glen area now pumps 145 gpm into the city pipeline, part of a total 210 gpm on Roberts land and 400 gpm brought to the city via a 6 inch line at 2 psi. A lease purchase secures permanent water rights after 18 payments. contract hinges on two initial wells producing at least 200 gpm. An additional reconditioned pump will be installed at No 3 South Hill as a standby to No 4 South Hill with automatic reservoir controls to prevent shortages. wells show a steady, satisfactory level.

Camp Mitre Peak Opens as 100 Girls Arrive Sunday

Over 100 girls from the Permian Basin area are expected to attend the new Camp Mitre Peak Girl Scout camp opening Sunday. Four two week sessions are planned this summer at the camp between Alpine and Fort Davis. A new lodge and unit have been added. Aluminum Awning Installed At Brewster County Memorial Hospital

A 100 foot aluminum awning was added along the west side of the hospital north wing. B and F Sheet Metal Works performed the installation for 700 dollars, including moving sun screens outside. Board chairman Jack Cross said funds came from the memorial fund not earmarked for a specific project and welcomed further gifts to the memorial fund.

New Methodist Minister Robert K Baird Named Pastor

Robert K Baird, native of Union County New Mexico, has been appointed pastor of First Methodist Church and director of the Wesley Foundation at Sul Ross State College. A Clayton High School graduate 1947, he earned BA from Eastern New Mexico University in 1951 and BD from Perkins School of Theology 1954. He led Epworth Church in Carlsbad opening 1955 building, parsonage in 1957, and educational facilities planned in 1959. He and wife Eula Arlene Childs have one son Lynn.

Bible School Underway at First Baptist Church

Vacation Bible School is in progress at the First Baptist church with more than 100 enrolled. Departments for children ages 3 to 16 meet from 8 30 to 11 30 every morning. The school will continue next week.

Wirth to Visit Park in Big Bend June 10 11

National Park Service Director Conrad L. Wirth will visit Big Bend National Park June 10 and 11 with Regional Director Hugh M. Miller and Regional Landscape Architect Jerome C. Miller to review Mission 66 progress. The visit follows rapid upgrades to camp grounds water and sewer systems roads bridges and new guest rooms supporting greater park use.

Alpine flood survey approved by House committee

The House Public Works Committee approved a resolution for a flood control survey of Alpine Creek and nearby areas. Congressman J T Rutherford told the Avalanche the plan authorizes but does not fund the project. He noted funding requests would wait for the 1961 budget after the 1960 appropriations bill.

CC Directors Take Affirmative Action On Members Proposals

The first of a series of Chamber of Commerce clinics was held on Friday May 30 with 10 members invited. 11 attended. Directors aim to shape a working program by gathering member ideas on tourism routes, city street and traffic improvements, parks, and lodging outreach. A traffic light proposal, better street signs, and a ban or fencing for junkyards were discussed. Lions and Rotary help for funding was suggested if city funds fail. A committee led by Charles De Barbrie will explore lectures at the Big Bend Museum for visiting tourists.

Alpine Man Killed After Gay Farewell To Departing Seniors

Funeral services for Frank Rodriguez, 45, were held in Livingston and Alpine, with burial in Alpine cemetery. He died after a car crash on U S Highway 9 near the Lobo Drive-In Theater while driving to West high school seniors’ farewell trip. His wife rode with him and was uninjured. Their daughter Elidia rode on the bus. she was returned to Alpine. Rodriguez, born October 1913 at Presidio, was a carpenter who lived most of his life in Alpine. He is survived by his widow, four sons, and several daughters.
