START MOVING COTTON PLANT TO ALPINE SOON
Work on removing the old cotton fumigation plant for Marta to Alpine is to start this week. John Fortner of Sul Ross, to supervise, says the giant cylinder equipment and structures should be ready by September when the first cotton shipments begin. The plant will sit north of the San Fe depot on the rail line for easy freight unloading, with about 7,000 bales fumigated next year using cyanide gas as in Marfa. The move to Alpine aims to serve river county cotton growers by rail, reducing truck transport costs previously paid to Marfa. Fortner notes cyanide fumigation is costly, about $1 per pound, with roughly 80 pounds used per fumigation of 70 bales.

Iron Safe Loose on Alpine Stairs After Cable Breaks
