Alpine notes report Gillett and Crenshaw visiting San Antonio, Miss Greenwood sisters visiting, and Dr. Sneeden traveling to Arkansas. Rainfall and a thunderstorm are reported east of Lenox, with property sales, land purchases, and cattle moves shaping local business. A Colquitt ranch fire destroys livestock buildings while a notable land sale process advances via Folsom & Folsom in Brewster County.
Brewster County will convene at Alpine Courthouse on the second Monday in June 1903. The court set a dumping site for town refuse in the arroyo north of the road in Mrs Darling's pasture and warned against dumping in Kokernot pasture south of town. Jail transfer: Frank Oxsheer, charged with murder, moved from Pecos to Sanderson for a habeas corpus hearing. bail set at 2000. Howell Johnson is Oxsheer's attorney.
Howell Johnson and R. B. Moore witnessed a dramatic cyclone near Fort Stockton on Wednesday. The storm passed about a half mile north of town, lifting water from Comanche Creek, stripping Mesquite brush, killing two horses and a colt, and leaving a wide 150 yard track in a semicircle around the town. No people or structures were harmed. This marks a remarkable event for Pecos County and possibly the first ever recorded in the area.
Sheriff Walton received a warrant from Austin for the arrest of D Alarcon known as Chico on forgery charges. Deputy Walker pursued Chico near the Dobe Walls and returned him to Travis county with Sheriff Matthews accompanying to Austin. Also, W P Harris, charged with swindling in Brewster county, was remanded to Dallas custody with an appeal planned. Other local items note land sales, musical figure J W Gantt leaving Alpine, and a large ranch claim between Arizona and New Mexico as owner W C Green. A gentle shower cooled the dust and air remains pleasant.
