Avalanche readers hail a Houston post office plan to speed delivery by numbering city mailing stations. Readers report delays, note soldiers’ subs, address-change alerts, and a request to merge rain transfer ideas. Letters from Cpl Parker and others show ongoing wartime paper coordination and coopera tion with the Weather Dept.
Eighteen members of the class of 43 received diplomas from Dr. L C Pope at the school’s commencement last Friday. Major Daniel R Webster of the flying school gave the keynote, urging graduates to plan for postwar peace and maintain faith in humanity’s problem solving. The program featured salutatory by Alice Cook, valedictory by Hal Smith, and class histories by Claudia Black, prophecies by David Walker, and a class will by Charlotte Miller.
Chaplain Capt Herbert J H Landdeck delivered a Memorial Day address at the airbase chapel before receiving orders to report elsewhere. He urged prayers for national victory and for Jesus Christ as the Hero of Peace, noting the day’s meaning for families who have lost loved ones in action.
Lt Wesley Carroll Holcombe of Alpine received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his aerial service in the Southwest Pacific between August and December 1942. He flew more than 50 missions, dropping supplies and transporting troops under enemy patrols near Japanese bases. Lt Gen Kenney expressed pride in the courage and contributions of American airmen, noting Holcombe’s ties to Sul Ross College and Alpine. Local health nurse Miss Pearl Puteroa and her mother returned from a brief vacation with Mrs R G Fulford of Dallas visiting Alpine.
The public is advised that within the next few days an alert for the Texas State Guard will be sounded in Alpine. Four long blasts on the fire siren will signal, hour unknown. Company A, Alpine, defends airplane landing facilities near the city and will test a defense problem. Do not follow the men when they are called out.
Tapt. George L. Ryan will visit the Selective Service office at 10 a.m. next Wednesday to interview volunteers for the Corps of Engineers, an area Pecos office announcement said.

Cpl Raul J Sotelo son of John Sotelo and wife Alpine California completed the factory service course at Lockheed Aircraft factory Marueay Cal and earned a diploma. King Terry Jr recently inducted sent to Camp Barkeley Tex for medical battalion training. B D Rowland US Marines arrived from San Diego to spend a month with his mother Eugenia Rowland while recovering from illness. Aviation Cadet Locke McClure moved from Tucson to Kingman for training as a water. John W Gentry Jr inducted into the army sent to Sheppard Field Wichita Falls for training. Pvt Louis V Uranga sent to Camp Wallace Texas for training. W T Billy Tom Meador inspector of radio equipment on PBM planes at Martin Aircraft Baltimore expected home on 10 day furlough. Technical students at the aircraft plant inspect all equipment before Navy acceptance. Esmest M Thornton Jr inducted recently sent to North Camp Hood Texas for training. Cpl K D Holland wrote from Alaska after eight months away he hopes to see U S A again. Lt Tom Stovell to get wings at Stockton California advanced flying school this month after transferring from Coast Guard. Sgt Jim Stovell in radio repair with ferrying command in Cincinnati. Both are sons of Mr and Mrs John Stovell.
CP&L announces a record ice business in the Big Bend region with April activity up about 150 percent from last year. Ice scoring machines have been installed at the Alpine and Marfa plants, boosting efficiency and reducing waste. Both plants are reportedly operating at capacity.
Taxpayers receive notices from the Collector of Internal Revenue. Austin deputy collector A Forrest Hope explains the 1942 tax total and that quarterly payers must remit one third. Bills are perforated, must be returned with the right half and remittance to the Austin office. Payment urged regardless of any Congress action to avoid June congestion.
Brewster County exceeded its May bond quota by a small margin. G W Baines chairman of the County War Finance committee announced the May quota was 10 500 and sales totaled 16 534 15. The June quota had not yet been announced.
OPA urges careful checking of War Ration Book Three applications to reduce errors. Print name and return address clearly, list all family members with birth dates on one form, sign in own handwriting, detach and keep the ID stub, add 3 cents postage, and mail before June. Also reminds readers to buy war bonds.
A report shows Flying School staff spend about 187000 annually for Alpine rent. Heavy rains and showers swept across Highland country last week with Maravilla near Marathon reporting bursts and some wind damage. Alpine experienced good showers and mid summer heat persisted through the week.
The June Bloys Camp Meet at Fort Davis will include a Sunday school in the morning, a preaching service at the Presbyterian church by Rev. Richard G. Irving, and a basket dinner at 1 30. The annual business meeting follows in the Tabernacle to plan the 1943 August gathering.
The Brewster County Health Unit reports 147.29 raised in the Easter Seal drive. Mrs H R Gardenairman thanked donors and noted the annual campaign began in 1983 under the health unit’s auspices.
Eula Mae Graves age 62 died at her North Third Street home after several months of sickness. Born in Amity Arkansas October 2 1880 she moved to Texas years ago and married J. F. Graves in Pleasant Grove in 1897. Surviving are husband 11 children including Lt. B C Graves in Hollywood Florida and others in India Denver Arizona San Antonio Hale Center Oklahoma City and Alpine. Two grandchildren and several siblings also survive. Funeral was at the Methodist church with Rev. Ray B McGrew, pallbearers listed. body shipped to Plainview for burial.
War department survey finds Roughly 237 300 yearly rent for Advanced Flying School personnel off post in Alpine and Marfa with non civil service contractor workers adding about 55 000 annually. About 157 officers 277 enlisted men and 400 civilian employees live off base, paying average rents of 43 31 and 23 dollars monthly respectively.
The Postoffice Department announces a rapid rollout of a new delivery method adding a branch postoffice number to city addresses. The system speeds mail distribution to branch offices and aids inexperienced clerks, with an example showing John C. Smith 222 Mattapan Ave Boston 8 Wes. Residents are urged to include the postal unit number in return addresses.
