Mrs. Ray Newsom of Alpine reeled the largest fish ever seen in Marfa Lake at 35 pounds, a yellow cat hooked with cat bait. Pictorial proof will appear in next week's Avalanche along with local staff changes, honor mentions, and sports updates including Norm Cash and Carl Warwick trades.
Republican John Tower carried Brewster County by 45 votes in the U S Senate runoff last Saturday with 346 to 301 over Democrat Bill Blakley. In the April 4 special election Tower led with 238 votes to 114 for Blakley and others at 373, totaling 725 voters versus 647 on May 27.
Claude D. Arnold and sister Mrs. R L Evans Jr purchase Alpine Drug Store from John W. Gentry H M Bowden Duane Smith and Mrs Shirley Scales. Gentry retires after 50 years as pharmacist and Alpine resident since 1912. Bowden and family move to Weslaco joining Corner Drug. Arnold 28 years a pharmacist and local leader plans to keep store's tradition.
The Alpine Cowboys announce games at Kekeract Field and Artesia N M with June 2 14 5 6 7 and 8 dates. In Carlsbad Alpine won 13 innings 4 3 Casey the winning pitcher Thompson homered. Rocci Giordano struck out nine in a 6 4 win over El Paso at Kobernot Field.
Funeral services for Jesse Walter Gilmer 77 were held at the First Methodist Church with Rev Kel ly Scott officiating. Burial followed in Inn Grove Cemetery. He died in a El Paso hospital after a six month illness. He leaves a wife a son two sons predeceased a daughter and grandchildren. Born Kerr County Texas November 8 1903 he ranched near Rock springs Char lie Green ranch south of Marathon and later farmed at San Vicente before selling land to Big Bend National Park and retiring from active work.
Miss Willa Dale Hilbrich of Alpine joins a May 26 to June 5 Baylor University Religious Hour Choir tour. The 45 voice ensemble performs gospel songs hymns and anthems across Arkansas Missouri and the Chicago area inspiring Baylor Wednesday services attended by 1000 to 2000 students. Hilbrich a music education major plans to return to Alpine June 6 and attend Sul Ross College this summer.
Mrs Joe Smith a Sanderson teacher and former Alpine resident travels with her grandson Mike Boudreaux who has lived with her to visit relatives in Maryland and Virginia leaving soon.
Joe Bellamah former Sul Ross College band director is appointed director of the Texas A&I College band effective September 1. He led Sul Ross from 1951 to 1958 developing a top Southwest marching band and has since lived in San Antonio engaged in music work.
Alpine High School honored Donald Stevens as principal at a ceremony noted for a large crowd. Students earned numerous awards including salutatorian Carol Vogt and valedictorian Tony Warnock with English and academics recognized. Athletic honors went to Armando Leyva in boxing and Betsy Wright received AAUW scholarship. campus awards highlighted by absent or tardy-free attendance for 35 days.
Alpine hosts the undefeated Alpine Internationals versus Chihuahua City’s Avalos in a weekend series at Kokernet Field. A 2:30 p.m. Saturday single game followed by a 1:30 p.m. Sunday doubleheader. Manager Felix Llanez nominates Jerry Brunello Saturday. Vicky Hernandez and Tino Fuentes slated for Sunday. Chihuahua, an 18 man squad led by Juan Manuel Venegas with captain Al Torres, travels by train to Ojinata, Mexico, then by local car to Alpine.
Brewster County launches a county wide campaign to raise 122 dollars toward a cancer fund. Mrs. Rogers invites contributions by mail or home pickup. Dr. W. E. Lockhart commends crusade chair Mrs. Allan Schonberg and fund raising chair Mrs. James Gillaspy for their leadership and the many workers involved.
Bill Anderau Gary Briggs and Topper Thomas will travel to Austin for the six day Lone Star Boys State program at the University of Texas. The session runs from June 4 to June 10 and will be conducted under the citizenship training program. Dr Allen Briggs will drive the trio back after their participation with a short fishing stop at Lake Buchanan.
Mrs. O W Edwards of Tucson Arizona is visiting her daughter Mrs Verdis Pack and family this week. Mrs Pack and children will accompany Mrs Edwards home next week and visit there for a week.
Rev Kelley E Scot becomes pastor at First Methodist Alpine serving since West Texas. His Mountain View tenure in El Paso saw a $16500 parsonage and a $50600 church school, 23 rooms, new pews, and a $3600 Baldwin organ. From May 1958 to May 1961 Mountain View membership rose from 361 to 732 with 240 baptisms and 263 transfers or professions.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce Tourist Development Committee proposes two billboards along U S routes 90 and 67 290 a regional brochure printed 100000 copies and a tourist clinic by Texas Highway Department experts to boost summer and winter business Readiness to act cited by committee members and Alpine Chamber president Thad Corkins Exhibit shows broad backing from local businesses and tourism staff.
Jim Burling longtime Car Parts Depot manager here since 1950 is promoted to supervisor of the Alamogordo store in New Mexico. He and his wife and three children will move this weekend Theron Johnson will run both Alpine and Marfa locations.
Pure Oil Company No 1 well operated by Joe T Lane pressed a wildcat drill near the Brewster County line, with drilling activity reported below 3500 feet yesterday in Presidio County.
Encino resident Nald E. Stevens will become principal at Alpine High School. He previously taught two years at Falfurrias High School and earned the U S Presidential Unit Citation with two bronze stars and Korean and Japanese service medals. Stevens and his wife Ruby have two children and attend the Baptist Church.
Alpine shoppers are targeted in two Retail Merchants Committee projects. Big Bend Bargain Days run Thursday through Saturday with marked down merchandise to boost sales. A Lucky Fathers giveaway awards one $100 gift certificate and two $50 prizes redeemable with Alpine merchants to Brewster Presidio Terrell and Jeff Davis County residents.
Alpine Council No 5096 schedules a short important called meeting tonight at 7 30 in the Parish Hall. All members urged to attend.
Dr. H. H. Gilliam who has practiced dentistry in the Hill Building for months moved to Houston this week and will be associated with Dr Bauer in the Jones Apothecary Building there.
