Opening of Pecos River Bridge Promises Festive Patronage

Herbert Petry Jr. of Carrizo Springs, new state highway commissioner, will cut the ribbon to open the Pecos River Bridge as a multi-town celebration unfolds on U. S. 90. Del Rio president John L. Dodson Jr. and Alpine, Sanderson, and other chambers plan escorts, certificates, and cross-border participation from Ciudad Acuña Mexico with bull fighter Bette Ford invited.

Marathon businessman dies after long illness

Henry Allen Woo Springfield, 36, of Marathon, a longtime business leader and former head of the Marathon School Board, died Thursday in El Paso after a long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Methodist Church with Rev. Doyle Riley officiating. World War II veteran, he was a member of the Methodist Church, the Waller Skinner American Legion Post, Alpine Masonic Lodge, and manager of Bailey Fluorspar Co. in Marathon. Active pallbearers were legion post members. Masonic rites followed at Marathon Cemetery.

Cowboys Seek Capacity Crowds At Kokernot For Final Home Stand

Alpine plans to pack Kokernot Field for two Cowboys home games against the Linton Oilers with 1000 fans target per game. Paisano Day and Paisano Encampment turnout are expected. John Sanford and Red Swanson to pitch. Cowboy hitters include Van Cleef Hopkins Swain and Lewis. The team then travels to Jal and Casa Grande for upcoming series.

New Mercury Finds Reported Near Terlingua

The Terlingua District in Brewster County reports two new mercury finds. On July 25 the Terlingua Mercury Corp Fresno Mine completed the first furnace run producing 569 pounds of mercury from 24 tons of high grade ore and six tons of fluxing ore.

Universal Corp to Intensify Brewster County Uranium Exploration

Universal Corp plans expanded exploration in southern Brewster County led by Donald Peters of Houston. About 131000 dollars has been spent in the past 11 months on salaries leases and equipment. Mayer Hanson of Denver with E J Longyear Co audits holdings and outlines future exploration steps. Occurrences of uranium have been found near the Lajitas area with deposits not yet fully defined. Peters says stock registration with the SEC has been filed with final approval expected between August 1 and 15, halting stock sales until approval is granted.

Paisano Encampment Draws Large Crowd

About 1900 attended the opening service of Paisano Baptist Encampment’s 35th annual session led by Dr. Perry F. Webb. An estimated 1000 people stayed on the 1000 acre grounds with 850 served at the first meal. Several states are represented and events include Alpine Rotary meetings, Cowboy night, a Paisano Day baseball game at Kokernot Field, and a Sunday music festival.

Alpine Water Rates Reduced

City officials announce lower water charges effective Sept 1 1955 with a 3000 gallon minimum and stepped rates: 3 40 per thousand for up to 7000 gallons, 0c per thousand for next 10000, 30c per thousand over 20000, replacing former rates of 3 minimum for 3000 gallons, 30c for next 7000, and 1 per thousand beyond 10000. City says rates balance finances and keep water affordable.

Gospel Meeting Planned At Church of Christ Here

R Charles Garner minister of Sunrise Acres Church of Christ El Paso will conduct a revival meeting at the Church of Christ here from August 1 to August 9. Services will be daily at 8 pm and 11 am on Sunday. Garner is a graduate of Acie Christian College and nephew of Claud Garner elder of Alpine church.

Petros to Retire After 49 Years with Southern Pacific

R Earl Petros SP agent in El Paso plans retirement August 1 ending a long railroad career starting in 1901 with the Santa Fe. He served 38 years across telegraph, dispatching and agent roles, including time in Nuevo Mexico Chihuahua division and El Paso Union Depot, with a major transfer prompted by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Rainfall Dominates Wide Big Bend Davis Mountains Area

Heavy rains continue across the Big Bend and Davis Mountains with totals up to two inches in some localities. Fort Davis reports 0.5 inches with higher amounts on ranches. McDonald Observatory notes over four inches this week. Alpine and Marathon areas record multiple inches, with Paisano Encampment and 101 Ranch near Marfa receiving 1.5 to 2 inches. The Alpine area totals 2.69 inches for the month and 6.63 for the year, compared to 3.47 inches to this date last year.

Legion To Hold Barbecue Dance Saturday Evening

The American Legion will host a barbecue and dance at the Legion Hall on Saturday evening. Barbecue plates cost 1.25 dollars and the dance entry is 14 dollars per person.
