The City of Alpine rejected a proposed 65 000 water system improvement bond by 359 to 175 amid 539 ballots cast. Special session canvassed election results with Dr. Lockhart noting tax voters opposed the bonds due to higher tax rates, while intent was to fund new pipelines with city crews.
The Alpine Avalanche won an Honorable Mention in the 1958 National Better Newspapers Contest for Best News Story. Editor Jim Glasscock’s July 4 1957 feature told how Mrs Clfford White endured after her husband died in a canyon incident at Big Bend National Park.
The thirty eighth Paisano Baptist Encampment opens Monday July 28 and runs to Sunday August 3 in the Alpine Marfa mountains. Four new cottages join more dormitories as the grounds reach over 100 buildings. Notables include Dr. Perry F. Webb and Dr. F. B. Thorn among preachers and Dr. R. H. Dilday as director of religious education.
The West Texas Press Association plans its annual meeting in Alpine August 7 8 9 with rich publicity from the West Texas Publisher and a special mailing from West Texas Utilities. Guests will see Big Bend Davis Mountains area materials and enjoy Alpine recreation details as the organization promotes a Texan scenic vacation.
WG Fielder of Alpine won the marksman medal with a 1240 aggregate at the NIA approved shoot by the Big Bend Pistol Club on the Border Patrol Range near Marfa. Ned Bishop of Carta Valley led with 1481, followed by W H McNutt of Mountain Home with 1445 and Hillary M Howe of Presidio with 1284. The event featured 22 caliber, center fire, and national match courses with multiple regional shooters listed. The next MLA approved shoot by the Big Bend club will be held in Marfa on August 17 with the 94 caliber pistol as major gun.
Rev. Robert F. Bristol to become pastor of the First Christian Church here on Sept. 1 and will bring Mrs. Bristol from Llano. He names Rev. Gene Brice to return to studies at Yale. Bristol has 36 years in ministry and degrees from Johnston Bible College and Mexico. He taught languages at New Mexico Western College and previously served in Pine Bluff, Houston, Corsicana and Marta.
Captain Charles M W Wade announces new assignments for commissioned officers in the Morfa Alpine United States Army Reserve Unit. Charles Wilkinson designated battery executive officer, James Mahan battery supply officer, and Miehard telmnendert platoon leader. Wade notes Pry A receives full-officer length for first time since the unit’s 1947 formation under Captain Albert Lagan.
Hearings begin at 10 am August 4 in Ward District Court Fort Davis on two injunction suits against Southwest Weather Research and others to stop cloud seeding over plaintiffs land and prevent interference with weather. Plaintiffs list William Karney H O Metcalfe Dan Moody Henry Kiincell Subbe man Meline Sealy as their counsel. Defendants in the first suit are Turpin Kerr Smith Midland. no defense counsel named yet for the second suit.
Kay Lateff secretary of the Prewater County Democratic executive Committee announced three precinct conventions. Precinct 4 meets Saturday July 26 at the County Courthouse with Lateff presiding. Precinct 2 meets at Centennial School with Gallego presiding. Precinct 4 meets at Marathon School with Hill Dor Hell presiding.
Alpine School officials said this week that work on preparing next year's budget has been initiated, aiming for review by school board members at the August 1 meeting.
Alpine Internationale will host two matches at Kokernot Field this Sunday. Hinabopam faces Villa Acuna of Mexico in the opener, with Marta Indiane Gaya Llanes slated to start the first game.
Lamar Tech geology department runs a geological field camp for the second semester at Sul Ross State College. In charge are E. B. Viland and Darrell Ff of Tech. Twelve Lamar students and one Sul Ross student attend while John Maught leads the Sul Ross representation. Students stay at Hancock Hall with operations centered around Marathon for mapping amid varied geological formations.

The Alpine Cowboys will travel this weekend with a home return Aug 1 for a series against Lackland Air Force Base in Kokernot Field. They will play Beaumont Army Medical Center Comets in San Antonio Friday and Saturday, then El Paso Merchants on July 29. Aug 2 at home is Paisano Day. Manager Tom Chandler announced Alpine/Kokernot Field hosts the state National Baseball Congress tournament likely starting Aug 9 for 4 or 5 days to determine Texas entries for NBC national finals in Wichita Kansas.

Republican County chairman PL Avant says a GOP primary will be held Saturday in Precinct Plast to satisfy Texas election laws. The law requires primaries if a party garners 200,000 votes for governor in the general election to maintain its county organization. Polls open as required by law.
A Sacramento State College Foundation booklet by Hubert Jenkins argues Big Bend National Park contains the southernmost glaciated area in the United States. Fieldwork in March and April included Kodachrome images and notes on rock debris, with emphasis on the Chisos Mountains and related basins.
Wade Reid was elected president of the Marfa Production Credit Association at its thirteenth annual meeting in Marfa last Saturday. New officers include George Jones as vice president and Jack Knight as secretary treasurer with others named among directors. The association serves 10 counties and provides loans totaling around 0.0 million each year.
Work on numbering and reserving seats at Alpine High School football stadium has begun. Sections A and B will contain 170 seats each. A reserved seat for the 1088 season covers five home games and costs 95 or 1.95 per seat per game.
Polls open 8 am to 7 pm for Brewster County races including judge of the aged district court and several local petitions. Absentee voting closed Tuesday with 100 votes cast. uncontested offices include county and district clerk, county treasurer, state representative, state senator, and other local officials.
Mirst National Bank clinched the Little League title with one loss by beating Casner's 74 last Thursday. The Hawks also defeated All State at Kokernot Field last Saturday night. Final standings list Hank Casner's 82 percent, Morrison's 88, Mr Davie, Chuy's 46, Legion 0. Last week results show Mr Davie 1 Chuy's Rank 7 Casner's Morrison's 1 0 Legion 3 and Morrison's 1 Ft Davie 0 protest forfeit.
