Harvey Is Named Head Grid Coach at Sul Ross
Sul Ross State College announces three athletic staff changes. Richard Harvey promoted to head football coach and athletic director succeeding David Slaughter who resigns effective July 14. Chester Story to coach basketball succeeding Gerald Stockton. Dr. Paul Pierce named department chair in health and physical education. Slaughter record 43-45-3 in nine seasons. Harvey praised for long service at Sul Ross since 1961 and prior Grapevine High tenure. Pierce previously coached and chaired at Sam Houston State College and holds a Doctor of Education in physical education. Story from Sherman High School comes to Sul Ross after coaching at Grapevine and Marshall High Schools.

Alpine Housing Authority to open bids for 50 unit project
The Alpine Housing Authority will open bids at 4 p.m. on Thursday August 8 at City Hall for a 50 unit low rent housing project. Twenty eight units are for the elderly and 22 are standard. three sites will host the buildings with a 200 day construction window plus 60 days for landscaping. The project has federal funding totaling 759000 dollars.

Sul Ross Opens Second Summer Session July 15
Registration for Sul Ross State College second summer session is July 15 in the HPE building gym. Registrar Glenn Davis says registration runs 9 to 4 by last-name initial with specific time blocks. New students must show admission slips and bring social security cards. First day of classes is July 16 and the deadline to register or add is July 18. Sul Ross offers 106 courses across six divisions. graduating seniors must file graduation applications.

Alpine Sule Ross Theatre opens third season in Big Bend
The Alpine Sule Ross Theatre of the Big Bend kicked off its third season at Kokernot Lodge open air theater with 28 performances of six plays running through Aug 17. The Kiss of Death moved to an 830 pm show on Thursday. Any Wednesday began Tuesday with details on cast and staff led by E Clayton McCarty. Admission remains free courtesy Sul Ross State College and local sponsors.

Gravel Plant Under Construction Near Alpine
A modern sand gravel and crushed rock plant is being built 3 miles southwest of Alpine on the Howard L. Orem property. It will produce about 1000 tons daily and is designed by Orem Research Co. Graduation ceremonies for Orem Sand & Gravel Co. of Alpine are set for Thursday August 22 in the HPE building. The project lies in a box canyon with a permanent water supply to be used as a lake after mining. Indian artifacts have been found in gravels to depths of about 20 feet in a canyon about 1500 feet wide and 50 feet deep.
