Annual Masonic Family Night at Paisano Campground

The Masons and families gather at Paisano Baptist Encampment grounds between Alpine and Marfa from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday July 11 for barbecue, a male quartet and fellowship. Officers of 12 lodges will be installed led by Harvey C. Byrd as installing officer and Hal Burnett delivering the address.

Death of L. D. Harris Alpine figure noted

L D Jug Harris longtime Alpine resident died suddenly at home while barbecuing steaks. He worked for the U S Department of Agriculture before retirement and served as past master of Alpine Lodge and past commander of Alpine Commandery. Survived by wife two children and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements pending Geeslin Funeral Home.

Sul Ross Hosts Reading Conference in Alpine This Summer

Sul Ross State University will host the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading Conference in Alpine July 20 28. The 2 day conference features Dr Bill Martin of Holt Rinehart and Winston and Vernon Eady of North Texas State University as speakers and consultants. Exhibits by educational materials manufacturers and distributors are planned. Early registration and housing reservations may be made by contacting Bill Spurgin or Dr Ernest B Speck at Sul Ross.

White to visit here Friday for district events

Congressman Richard C. White plans a Friday visit for constituents in the 16th District during the 4th of July recess. He will stay overnight in Alpine attend the World Championship Soaring Meet at Presidio County Airport Saturday morning and attend the dedication of four historical markers in Sierra Blanca Saturday afternoon before returning to Washington Sunday. NESOM GETS CONTRACT J W Nesom Construction Co of Alpine won a $16525 bid to remodel the old City Hall building. the city council approved at a special meeting as the sole bid. The project will be leaded by the U S Customs Service.

Park School Receives $6,840 Under Public Law 874

The U S Office of Education approves a $6 840 payment to San Vicente School District in Big Bend National Park under Public Law 874. The funds compensate districts with many students whose parents work at non taxable federal installations.

El Paso Weekend Visit Notes Morans and Relatives

Mr and Mrs Ray Morgan and Mrs Raynes visited El Paso with the Roscoe Morgans. Oscoe Mor an underwent surgery in an El Paso hospital last week and was much improved by Sunday.

Alpine observes Independence Day with closures and flags

Most Alpine businesses close Saturday July 4 for Independence Day. Alpine Post Office windows close at noon Friday July 3 with regular box service and carrier delivery. Court House and City Office close Saturday while remaining open Friday. American Legion Auxiliary leader Elvie F. Williams calls citizens to fly flags on the 4th and be flag wafers to show support for the country.

Don Chandler to Return as Sul Ross Music Instructor

Don Chandler, music instructor and former coordinator of entertainment for the United States Armed Forces in South Vietnam, will return to Sul Ross State University in September. He joined Sul Ross from Tyler Public Schools in September 1967 and has been on leave since September 1969 to work with the Armed Forces in Vietnam. He will teach music theory and woodwind instruction, and is noted as an accomplished clarinet soloist.

Top pilots win honors at World Soaring Championships

Open class leader George Moffatt of Elizabeth New Jersey holds 5422 points while Helmut Reichman of Germany West leads standard class with 7192 as the 12th World Soaring Championships near conclusion. Astronaut Neil Armstrong attended the meet as a Nixon representative.

Brewster Memorial Hires W C Donohoo as Administrator

The Brewster Memorial Hospital board appoints W C Donohoo as hospital administrator to replace John Eathorne. Donohoo, 46, from Amarillo, previously worked at St Josephs Fort Worth and Northwest Texas Hospital Lubbock. He starts July 13 and has seven children.
