Alpine residents will enjoy a weekend of safe Fourth of July activities with baseball games at Kokernot field. The Alpine Cowboys host Fort Bliss Falcons in a three game series starting this afternoon. A Sunday double header features Cowboys and Alpine Internationals versus Van Horn. Fireworks display sponsored by Big Bend Post 79 Legion set for Sunday night at the golf course, with donations urged to cover costs. Marathon American Legion plans Independence Day barbecue July 3 and dances July 2 and 3 with Ed Fitzgerald and the Lone Star Ramblers providing music.

New Buildings Rise at Hiland Village in East Alpine
Construction begins on a combined office apartment at White’s Highland Village in East Alpine owned by Mr and Mrs Hugh Ite who also rent their on site residence. A 20 by 40 foot tile laundry building nears completion and an addition to the Highland Snack bar run by Mr and Mrs John Bumgardner starts to serve as a kitchen.

Former Alpine Resident Dies in Plane Accident at Dell City
Marvin L. Turney Jr., 39, of Van Horn and former Alpine resident, was killed Saturday afternoon in Dell City when the propeller struck him during a dusting plane incident. Graveside rites were held at Elm Grove cemetery at 6 p.m. Monday. He was born in Fort Stockton on January 15 1915 and lived in Monahans before moving to Van Horn two years ago. He married Geraldine Parker in 1938 and served as a traffic controller in World War II. He is survived by his widow a daughter Sammie Sue and his mother Mrs. M L Turney of Monahans.

Thirteen Alpine boys attended the annual Baptist Women's Missionary Union district 7 camp at Paisano encampment last week. The Alpine group sponsors were Rev. Glenn W. Bales and Buddy Calcote. Five Alpine boys earned pages in the Recognition service. Jerry Armstrong and John Page as Page, Tilman Eddy as Squire, Wallace Peters and Carey Page as Knight. Junior G A girls camp opened with about 300 attendees and runs through today. The G A Intermediate girls camp starts next week and continues through July 9.

Alpine Man Lenis Turner Dead From Bullet Wound
Funeral services were held at First Baptist church for Lenis L. Turner age 39 found dead with a bullet wound and a 30 30 rifle beside him near the cemetery road in Southeast Alpine. Turner born May 24 1915 Sanderson moved to Alpine in 1926 served in World War II and leaves a widow a daughter 15 a mother three brothers and a sister. Interment was at Elm Grove with American Legion honors.

The Alpine Cowboys went 1 win and 2 losses on a road trip to South Texas. Refugio handed Alpine a 15-0 defeat on Saturday while Refugio won 2-1 Sunday. Monday night Alpine beat the Plymouth Oilers 7-2 at Linton. Unofficial notes mention Refugio pitchers Russell, Roger, Stout and Ellis allowing 10 hits with four errors. Water and highway projects under way at Big Bend Park
Big Bend National Park sees major water supply and road work this summer. A three mile pipeline from Oak Spring to a 500000 gallon storage tank will feed the Basin area with a 25000 gallon spring tank and a 1300 foot lift. Bids are sought for the pipeline while options exist to tie in additional springs. A second line from Bar Ranch will augment water at the park headquarters and a new Panther Junction service station. Meanwhile seven and a half miles of unimproved road between Todd Hill and Bar Tromesa are being rushed to improve park access despite peak summer travel. Pvt James W Calvert begins eight weeks of basic training at Fort Bliss. a former Sul Ross College rodeo champion, he is married to Betty Newton of Alpine and works at First National Bank during service.

Drownings Narrate Ozona Flood Tragedy Involving Sul Ross Couple
A Sul Ross summer student and his wife are missing after a flood in the Ozona area. Mr. Ruben Gutierrez of Del Rio drowned after leaving the car to seek help while returning to Alpine from Del Rio. Their child was left with relatives in Del Rio. Mrs Gutierrez taught at San Felipe School in Del Rio.

Drowning of Two Brothers at Boquillas Canyon
Warren D. Wagner 24 and Malcolm Wagner 19 died in the Rio Grande near Boquillas Canyon during a Big Bend National Park outing. Their companions, B L Pastor and Alpine girls Virginia Godfrey Peggy Finney and Olean Vick, witnessed the tragedy as the brothers failed to resurface after diving for a missing swimmer. Artificial respiration failed. The older Wagner worked as a Southern Pacific relief operator in Alpine. the funeral train left Crowley, Louisiana, for Rayne, Louisiana.

East-West Traffic Thru Alpine Halted By Floods
Mrs. M. L. Edith Hopson of Alpine was elected vice-president of the 5th division Dept. of Texas American Legion Auxiliary at the 5th division convention in Odess a last weekend. The 5th division spans Breckenridge to El Paso and Del Rio, with Hopson noted for long auxiliary service including prior presidencies and as the first life member of the Auxiliary in the nation.

A group returning from Girls State in Austin found Ozona flooded after a week start. They sheltered at Kyle homes overnight as water rose to about four feet. They escaped to higher ground and continued homeward in the morning. Marsha Broadfoot stayed behind to aid Red Cross relief efforts.

Professor to Lead Indo China Mission Leave
Dr. Noble Armstrong professor of Teacher Education at Sul Ross College has been granted a yearlong leave to join a special educational mission to Indo-China. The program run by the Foreign Operations Administration under the State Department cites his Red Cross leadership in World War II and European service as key to his selection. He will leave Alpine after summer term ends, fly from Washington for orientation, then proceed to Saigon to begin duties, with his family remaining in Alpine.

Fireman James C. Lee Arrives at Guantanamo Bay Cuba
