New Marathon Library Building to Be Dedicated Sunday
The Marathon library’s new 20 by 40 foot building, started last month, will be formally dedicated Sunday at 3 30 p m. County Judge Felix McGaughy will speak and attendees may inspect the structure. The library holds about 2200 books and occupies county property shared with the Women’s Civic club in a community center area.

Alpine Pvt Manuel Martinez serves in Korea via Japan duty
Army Pvt Manuel Martinez of Alpine serves in Japan with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. The 187th Rakkasans, veterans of two combat jumps into Korea, fought alongside many U S divisions and now act as a security force. Pvt 7 wears the Parachutist badge and the Combat Infantryman badge along with National Defense Service Medal and the U N Korea service ribbons.

Slick-Urschel Oil Co of San Antonio plans a second re entry into the Decie ranch test six miles northwest of Marathon Texas on Sec 47 block 4 GC SF survey. The initial test drilled by Woods Oil & Gas Co reached 7249 to 7271 feet with gas reported at 250000 cubic feet daily and formations tentatively Devonian. Poll Taxes Paid In County Near Final Deadline
One thousand sixty poll taxes had been paid in the county through Wednesday with about seven to six hundred more expected before the final deadline. Sheriff Tax Collector Jim Skinner said the office would stay open tomorrow past noon and until 10 p.m. to help those unable to come earlier. Deputy collector Edna Moss spent four days in Marathon issuing receipts and saving voters a trip to the county seat.

Mothers' March on Polio launches for Alpine and Marathon
Sirens and bells mark the start of the Mothers' March on Polio from 7 to 8 pm. Residents are asked to show lights for pickup by visiting mothers. The Pilot club chaired by Mrs. Gene Benson and Marathon’s Mrs. Tom Yarbro organize the events. Donations reach about $1100 to date from Alpine and Marathon, plus other fundraisers adding modest amounts.
