Jim Daugherty Midland district 2 T2 Lions International was guest speaker at Alpine Lions Club luncheon at Holland hotel. He spoke on Lionism and helped plan summer district convention in Alpine. Zone Chairman Walter Garnett Ed Davidson and Mr Stringer attended as guests. Cub Dale Larrison was initiated with Governor Daugherty performing the ceremony. Mrs Bill Dorris left for Spokane to visit her daughter and family.
Poll tax receipts reached 1041 by yesterday morning as the January 31 deadline looms for voters to qualify for this year’s elections. Deputy Tax Collector Vic Hill said the office will stay open next Tuesday to accommodate payments, with an estimated 1,000 or more voters still unpaid from 1948’s pattern of 2092 receipts.
Alpine High School FFA, coached by Dan Graham, swept the Big Bend Future Farmer Leadership contests at Alpine High School last Saturday. In Greenhand, Santiago Gallego won first with Carlos Torres second and Celso Gallego third. Iraan’s Jon Mathews and Dale Ritchie placed fourth and fifth. Alpine also won Chapter Farmer, with top individuals Carroll Neeley first and Biltom Musgrave second, Bob Duncan third, Vernon Anderson fourth, James McNeely fifth, and R. C. McLain sixth from Grandfalls. In Farm Skill, poultry capitalization, Alpine trio David Vance Jim Harkey and Bobby Hammons claimed first to third. Alpine won both Conducting events for second-year and beginner FF A students. other schools were Grandfalls Iraan and Alpine, with Marathon and Del Rio absent. About 60 boys competed.
Funeral services for Mrs Wilma Jackson Miles who died here last Sunday were conducted from the Miles home. Rev L W Bridges and Rev Joe Frederick officiated. She was a Gail native graduate of Sul Ross college taught in Elbow and Alpine worked for Central Power and Light Alpine Lumber Co and West Texas Utilities. Survived by husband mother and four Jackson brothers. Interment Elm Grove with Livingston Funeral home.
The Sundowners opens at Granada via Eagle Lion release. Cathy Downs stars as the wife of a minor character with Robert Preston as the villain and Robert Sterling as the hero. Notable cast includes John Barrymore Jr., Chill Wills and John Litel. The film, based on Alan LeMay's novel, defies typical western tropes with no saloon chase and a joint effort against a crashing climax.
Alpine High School defeated Marfa 58 21 as Mendoza Flores and Roman scored 14 16 and 18 points respectively. Marfa led 28 11 at halftime and added 30 in the second half while Alpine added 10. The Bucks earlier swapped Luis Hernandez for Billy Cowell and the B game swung late for Marfa. Alpine volleyball beat Marfa 24 11. Alpine and Marathon eye mustang matchup next.
Presidio county grand jury indicts Ernest Dutchover for murder in the December 24 shooting death of Felicido Granada near Fort Davis Marfa. Dutchover released on 3,000 bond.
The 1950 Texas highway map is cut and may be had by anyone interested for the asking from the Texas Highway department. The map is up to date with detail on Texas highways, includes city route inserts, a mileage chart between key cities, and color scenes from the state.
Frank D. Quinn of the State Parks board traveled from Austin to liaise with national park officials about a planned national convention in Texas. The event would align with a formal opening at Big Bend National Park next fall and could draw President Truman. Delegates would gather in Austin with visits to Big Bend, Davis Mountain State Park, and Balmorhea State Park.

The Brewster county March of Dimes drive accelerates with hundreds of pledge cards mailed. Chairmen prep advertising talks and posters including polio victims. Local efforts aim to double last year’s $500 and fund care costs. four Brewster cases are noted with patients in Gonzales Warm Springs Abilene and Alpine.
Jack Johnson city traffic officer returns to limited duty after major surgery two months ago and expects full duty by February 1.
Brewster county received a total of 2660 auto license plates for 1950 and they go on sale February 1. The 1500 passenger vehicle tags are yellow on black and range BE-1800 to BE-3299. Other plates include truck ME-4450 to ME-4599 and farm RD-5950 to RD-6249.
The first evening Vespers in the new Presbyterian church will be held next Sunday January 29 with Glenn F. Davis as organist and choir director. The program features Davis organ selections anthem by the choir and numbers by choir members. The five oclock hour invites friends from other churches and nearby towns.
Dr Ross Maxwell, park superintendent, says if Texas extends the paved highway south from Alpine to the Big Bend boundary, a first class park road would connect with internal park roads. He notes possible routes from Nine Points mesa toward Maverick mountain and east of Study Butte, with extension toward St Helena Canyon as a likely future step.
Fifty years ago Jesse W. Merrill bought 10 registered Hereford cows at $100 each to improve his Jeff Davis county ranch. He built a pure bred program, kept a separate pasture for years, and now his cattle are in demand at premium prices in northern feedlots and eastern markets. He combined Leigh and Star Domino bloodlines with strategic bull purchases to strengthen the herd and continues to invest in top sires.
The Nazarene church of Alpine will welcome Rev. Adams from Colorado as the new pastor, replacing Rev. Dudley Anderson who has resigned to take a pastorate in El Paso. Dr. N. B. Armstrong of Sul Ross College filled the pulpit last Sunday. F. E. Bucey serves as Sunday School superintendent.

At Fort Davis meeting the Mile High club elected officers for six months and endorsed Trans-Texas Airways continuing air mail and passenger service. A committee led by C. R. Fryar and Tyrone Kelly will study the value of TTA to the community, consulting the Study club and PTAs.
Mrs. Clarence Hord Sr learns of the passing of her sister Mrs. Belle Foote aged 82 in Arlington Texas. A former Alpine resident known to many here, Mrs. Foote's funeral is set for Arlington today at 10 o'clock.
Mr and Mrs Vic Jones departed this week for Albuquerque New Mexico to establish a new home Johnny Braswell takes over the Jones meat department position at Alpine Super Market in their stead
