An Alpine resident expresses disappointment at changes after a new editor took over. Devine Cook and Vins defend local history and neighborliness while criticizing recent calendar and coverage decisions. The letter notes unusually mild winter weather and hints at continued discussion on page 8.
The new city water well at the southwest corner of Kokernot field is expected to yield 250 to 300 gallons per minute after a test that began Monday. A Pecos firm conducted the test, with a ditch dug from the water mains already in place and pipe installation planned soon. Driller Charlie Watson has moved his rig to the site just south of the Mrs. Gertrude Moss residence on Terlingua road. City officials say current supplies suffice for the upcoming summer.
Rev. Duncan McPherson of Austin Park Christian church El Paso has accepted the call to First Christian Church Alpine and will fill the pulpit on Sunday Feb 5. He is a Scotland native with education in his homeland and Canada before attending Kansas City Theological Seminary. He has pastored in Falls City and Norfolk Nebraska and Independence Kansas before serving Alpine about one year nine months. The church reports 40 percent Sunday school growth 50 percent in the Christian Youth Fellowship 30 percent rise in finances and 54 new members. He and wife Mildred and son Danny Lee plan to move soon.
R J Geear, brother in law of Tom Henderson of Marathon, is manager of the Shell Chemical plant in Los Angeles where scenes for the film White Heat were shot. The plant, government owned and operated by Shell during the war for Butadiene rubber, is now on standby. Mrs. Geear notes the filming was pleasant and the stars were charming.
Sul Ross State College will enlarge its intercollegiate program after admission to the Lone Star conference. The board designated 50 000 for field and stadium improvements while Sul Ross joins fellow member schools East Texas State Southwest Texas State Stephen F. Austin Sam Houston State in a full program including football basketball track golf tennis and baseball. The college plans to add 3000 concrete seats and re sodding of the gridiron, with track and golf teams slated for the spring conference meet at Southwest Texas State College.
The Deluxe Cleaners on North Fifth street will reopen about Feb 1 under R G Elliott Jr who bought the business from W A Foley Jr of White's City New Mexico in a deal closed last weekend Elliott who lived here 1946 47 for about 18 months plans to relocate his family here permanently and will combine cleaning with a hat cleaning and blocking service operating as Elliott Cleaners and Hatters with a 13 year old daughter and a son aged.
The Alpine chamber of commerce annual banquet will be at the Holland hotel on Thursday February 2 at 7 30 am. Three officers and three directors will be elected. Ballots will be mailed to all members as nominations are chosen by the nominating committee and from the floor. Dr R M Hawkins president of Sul Ross will be the main speaker. Details will be in next week's Avalanche.
Caliche base is being laid on the third 10 mile section of State Highway 118 from Alpine to near Kokernot ranch. The work is expected to finish in 10 to 15 days with warm weather to top the section. Right of way for the fourth 10 mile stretch is secured and a contract awarded to Bob Burleson of Alpine to fence the corridor crossing Butcher Knife Flat toward 40 miles south of Alpine.
Local Boy Scout groups net about 433 from a Granada theatre benefit show held Tuesday. Don Littleton reports funds will aid Scouts for the National Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge, with movie cast members like Chill Wills and John Barrymore Jr. participating.
The article notes contracts awarded in the SR plant expansion project and outlines a March of Dimes drive in Brewster County running from Monday through January. Dime Catchers shaped like miniature iron lungs are on display in local stores to encourage small contributions.
The Rev Robert S Snyder Arch Deacon of Missions of the New Mexico and West Texas district will be in Alpine on Sunday January 22. He will hold a Communion service at 8 p.m. at St James Episcopal Church. All are invited.
Five Sul Ross students escaped serious injury when the car overturned on a dirt road near the Southern Pacific underpass at the town west edge. The driver Miss Tony Parker Harper and passengers Miss Dorothy Nan Wardlaw Del Rio Miss Fay Stout Junction Wilma Elaine Bell Kerrville and Rafe Holland Junction were treated at a local hospital and released the same day.
John Burchett owner of Big Bend Gas Co. has purchased the Van Horn butane gas business from R. N. Burchard. The Burchetts will continue to reside in Alpine, per announcement this week.
The Pack Committee of Cub Scout Pack No. 41 will meet at 7 15 P M on January 31 in the First Christian church educational building Ashley S Webster, Chairman.
The Board of Regents approved contracts valued at 788 823.07 for three new campus buildings including a Fine Arts building a girls dormitory and a central dining hall. Ground breaking is planned within 30 days per Dr R M Hawk ing.
The Alpine Classroom Teachers and Brewster county Teachers associations plan a joint meeting on January 21 at 7 30 p m at the Methodist church. Guest speaker will be Philip Wardner president of the NEA department of Classroom Teachers. Wardner from Garden City New York was elected at the Boston convention on July 4 1949. He holds a BA from Harvard and an MA from Boston University and studied at Teachers College Columbia University and New York University. He teaches English and advises a school newspaper in Garden City High School. He has spoken at NEA conventions regional conferences and National Commission on Teacher Education and Professional standards meetings and served as vice president of the Teachers during 1948 49.
On January 11 at the Girl Scout Little House Brownie troop No. 7 held its first formal Fly-up. Fifteen Brownies moved to Intermediate level receiving pins and wings as leaders Mrs. Billy West and Mrs. J A Humbard presided. Tears and smiles marked the moment as candles and rituals highlighted the pledge laws and motto.
A Brewster county Alpine meeting of a citizen committee outlined initial plans for the Big Bend National Park dedication. Attendees discussed problems and each committee will report back within 60 days as a national and international ceremony may include President Truman and Mexico's President Aleman, with a late September or early October date expected.
