Black Gap Expanded to Ninety Nine Thousand Acres
The Texas Game Commission has expanded Black Gap Wildlife Management area to about 99,000 acres from its eastern edge at Big Bend National Park to the Rio Grande. The latest 19,000 acre purchase, costing $152,000 from J. M. Lea of San Angelo at $8 per acre, adds roughly 20 miles of Rio Grande frontage between Heath and Reagan Canyons. The Pitman-Robertson program provides 75 percent federal aid for acquisition and development, with managed hunting of surplus game allowed since 1955 via a public Austin drawing each October for a 640 acre section north of Big Bend’s Persimmon Gap.
