Annual CC Meet Set for Monday at Holland Hotel

The local chamber of commerce plans its annual meeting next Monday at 7 30 pm at the Holland hotel. Officers will be elected and a report on the year's accomplishments including road work and Big Bend park efforts will be presented. Tickets are 7 cents to attend and good turnout is hoped from members and local supporters.

Lecture for Men and Boys Monday by Dr Steiger

Fathers and sons are urged to attend a personal lecture by Dr Steiger at Junior High School next Monday at 7 30 PM. The talk is for men and adolescent boys and is in collaboration with the Parent Education Class.

Mule Over Car In Fort Davis Auto Accident

A mule, weighing about 1,400 pounds, was struck by a car driven by 17 year old Charles Bird and six friends near Fort Davis on a Davis Mountains State Park highway after dark. The seven occupants were slightly injured. The car belonged to Mrs. C. H. Bird.

Cold Jurors Delayed Murder Trial Due to Cold Court

In Fort Davis Judge C R Sutton postponed the trial of Jack Montgomery linked to the previous February murder at the COC camp. He cited extreme cold and unheated courtroom as preventing fair juror deliberations, a position supported by state supreme court members who have sat on January trials.

Parent-Teacher Meet Set for Monday at Junior High

City Clean Up Movement Starts With Lions Club Action

A campaign to tighten sanitation enforcement begins after the Lions Club passed a resolution urging the city commission to enforce the current ordinance on trash disposal. The effort will reach other clubs and civic groups to gain support for the cleanup plan, with the commission inviting citizen backing to achieve a cleaner, healthier city.

The Nicholson brothers Bruce 9 and Scott 7, traveling from Buenos Aires via Santiago, Lima, Salinas, Cristobal, Salvador, Mexico City and Durango, arrive to join their mother Mrs. V. L. Nicholson in Alpine El Paso area after their first long air trip. Bradford 11 already here, having crossed the ocean eight times. The father is a former American consul general to Argentina. Rain drenched the Big Bend area last night with a quarter to half inch precipitation reported from Sanderson to Pecos and beyond.

Stiff Schedule Facing Sul Ross Lobos Basketball Team

Sul Ross Lobos face a tough remaining schedule of eight games, all listed as home contests or on local court, per Coach B C Graves. The slate includes Texas A and I, Texas Tech, West Texas Teachers and Abilene Christian College with key dates in February. County NRS Office Expands To Include Jeff Davis County

Jeff Davis county added to the territory served by the National Reemployment Service in Brewster county. Elwell will make regular trips to Port Davis and Valentine to receive unemployed applications and place workers on highway projects underway in the county. Curtis Moore leaves Alpine Motor Company to join Brewster County Motors as bookkeeper, with E. R. Cox taking Moore’s bookkeeper duties and Frank Young continuing as parts and front service head.

Commissioners Vote Change in Road Work Supervision

At a weekly meeting the commissioners decided each will supervise roads in his district reversing two years of central control under a general superintendent. The move aims to address issues of fanaticism and faithfulness in county road work.

Work Under Way On U S 90 Gaps

Preliminary work has begun on a 12 mile stretch of U S 90 in Brewster county for caliche base and bituminous asphalt paving. The H B Zachary company of Laredo holds the contract, with completion expected in eight months. Progress also continues on a 7.5 mile segment of US 90 from Marfa east, begun before Christmas.

County voters approve a $2000 bond issue to finance land for Big Bend State Park. Final tally shows strong support with 167 for and 17 against among counted ballots, four Alpine precincts report similar margins. Bonds to be retired within five years with up to one cent additional tax per $100 valuation.

Two Fires At Marathon Cause Major Damage

Marathon January 15 two fires struck the town. Early morning gunshots preceded a fire at the Ratiedew Cate causing extensive interior damage likely from an electric wire. Monday at 9:20 a.m. another blaze damaged Mrs Clara Hate Woodson's home due to an old stove. Both properties were insured.

Deputies Sworn In New County Sheriff Office

TF Smevington longtime county tax assessor was sworn as a deputy in the office of W N Gourley sheriff assessor and collector. Milton Gilmer also sworn as deputy. Dawson Alpine and J P Bekley Marathon renamed deputies under Sheriff Gourley under the new consolidated office.
