Brewster county tire and tube quotas for January were set at 12 tires and 10 tubes for passenger cars motorcycles and light trucks and 39 tires 33 tubes for trucks and buses. The county board, appointed by County Judge R B Slight and Mayor L Starns with Cas Edwards of Alpine as chair, governs eligibility and purchase rules under the national tire rationing program.
Work started this week on topping a 5.6 mile stretch of U S highway 67 from the Brewster County line to the Santa Fe crossing. A $28,000 allocation was approved by the State Highway department. Grading and drainage structures are long completed. the Brewster county end was finished in October. Once finished the highway will be fully paved from Alpine to Dallas except for about 18 miles near the Santa Fe crossing over a new route.
Correction notices the 20-30 club sponsored Alpine Bucks trip to the Sun Bowl. The Avalanche notes this budding organization of young men originated the idea and played a major role in the success of the event.
James Cotter aged 95 dies at his Alpine home after long illness. Born December 26 1846 in Marysville Kentucky he moved to Texas shortly after the Civil War and settled in Brewster County in 1883. He and partner Tom McMullan built a cattle business in the Big Bend and he retired to raise a ranch in Green Valley before moving to Alpine. He married Lula Armstrong in 1888. they celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1938. Ten of their eleven children survive along with sixteen grandchildren. many relatives attend the funeral held at his home Tuesday.

A longtime Masonic member chamber of commerce school trustee and civic leader died after illness in El Paso. Continued on last page.
Harol King of Fort Davis, newly appointed member of Jeff Davis county tire rationing committee, experienced a car blowout on pavement ten minutes after his appointment. He recalled Fort Davis’s first car in 1908, recounted car history, and noted the board members include Warren D. Bloys and Vic Newton.
