Big Bend park upgrades total 2.5 million over three years
About 2.5 million dollars has been spent in Big Bend National Park in the past three years under the Mission 66 program to improve facilities. The National Park Service reports eight modern guest rooms were added and cabin facilities expanded to host 120 guests in the Chisos Mountains Basin. Visitation in 1958 reached 72,690, down from 74,960 in 1957, with 42 states plus D C, Alaska and a few foreign countries represented. Car occupancy averaged 3.5 persons. Construction under Mission 66 also adds grounds facilities in Basin and Rio Grande Village, with plans for campground development and new parking and campfire circle amenities.

Alpine resident McAfee Tussell McAfee has been appointed inspector for the Marfa Production Credit Association. A Texas A&M animal husbandry graduate, he served in the Air Forces during World War I and later held ranch foreman roles in Portales New Mexico. He has two children and will reside in Alpine during the assignment.
