Girls hurt in crash receive $340 for hospital costs

Friends of Paz Varela of Bedford and Frances Quesada of Presidio raised 340.38 in Alpine to aid hospital and medical expenses after a Dec 20 auto accident near Frances farm. Both girls were treated at Brewster County Memorial Hospital with Paz suffering about 150 stitches. Frances released.

David Maddox Laid To Rest

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. R. E. Streetman at Livingston Funeral Chapel for 4 year old David Nelson Maddox of 1302 N 3rd St who died Monday. Graveside rites were held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in El Dorado. He was born February 7 in Blanco and was a retired stock farmer who had lived in Alpine 19 years. Survived by his widow, four sons in Colorado and Texas, two daughters in California and El Dorado, two brothers, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Dimes March Will Begin On Friday in Brewster County

Greater Victories March of Dimes launches Friday January 2 in Brewster County with Mothers March climaxing the 1959 campaign. Avora Owens says the drive targets polio arthritis and birth defects, offering direct aid to children and support for adults, lasting through the month.

Joe McLean, Alpine resident for 17 years, becomes dealer of Sul Ross Gulf Service Station on East Highway 90 opposite the college. Married to Elizabeth Lange with two children, Clinnell and Marshall. Outlook Is Bright For 1959 In Alpine Region

The 1958 year brought prosperity to Alpine and the Big Bend Davis Mountains country with rains improving ranch conditions to the best in a decade. Ranches are lightly stocked but prices are high, and the area was declared a modified certified brucellosis free zone, boosting calf returns by about $500,000 annually. Antelope and deer seasons yielded large sums, while 1958 saw strong activity at the Alpine runway.

Aliens Must Register Under New Reporting Rule

Marcus T. Neeley of the Immigration and Naturalization Service says aliens in the United States will soon be required to report their addresses to the attorney general. Nearly all aliens must file by the end of January, with diplomats, certain international organization staff, and temporary agricultural workers exempt. Reports can be filed using forms available at post offices or immigration offices, with penalties for noncompliance.

Alpine firms report 1958 among best sales years with Christmas volume surpassing 1967. Factors for 1959 include top range conditions after rains, Sul Ross College expansion and rising enrollment, growing Big Bend tourism, planned highway spending, new fluorite facilities at Marathon, a Brewster County oil wildcat, and high bank deposits with $4,434,107.47 in Alpine First National on Sept 21 1958 versus $4,396,039.37 in 1957.

Concho Hereford Sale Set for Jan 9 in San Angelo

The Concho Hereford Association will hold its 12th annual auction of registered Herefords in San Angelo on Thursday January 8. Marathon Woman Dies at Home in Marathon

Mrs. Concepcion Validea Treji, 7, of Marathon, died at home Sunday in Marathon after a 42 year residence there. Funeral services are set for Tuesday morning with Livingston Funeral Home in charge.
