A flood of fan mail to Mr Scobee includes praise from artist Floyd N Walser of Boston. He defends Scobee’s animal stories, recalls a talking chicken and a bear joke, and introduces four Ducks kept by Scobee’s wife, noting they are cute though their pants are down.
Seventeen Brewster county men have been ordered to report at Fort Bliss El Paso next Sunday for induction into the U S army. All have passed their army physical exams and been accepted. Inductees from Mathon include Reyes Terrazas Ray Earl McKinney Cecil Erin Meeks Margarit Garcia and A J Coe. From Alpine are Andres Reyes Concepcion Gonzales Horace A Phillips Faustino Sanchez Ervin Cavness Petralino Minjarez Guadalupe Nunes Valenzuela Cabino Cobo Manuel Rodriguez Fidel Cano Harold Joe Sonnier Raquel Fierro Uranga.
A grass fire on the H. L. Koker nott & Son ranch in Jeff Davis County burned about 100 acres late last Sunday. The blaze covered land roughly 10 miles north of the headquarters house, per report this week. Government bonds and stamps offer the safest investment on the market.
J W Gillett, city commissioner and local draft board member, earned a first lieutenant commission this week and must report March 7 at Fort Sam Houston. A World War I veteran, he entered service May 10 1917 as a second lieutenant with the 90th Division in France and Germany. His successor as city commissioner and draft board member had not been announced by yesterday.
A norther swept into the Alpine area yesterday morning after a spell of warmer weather. A light shower overnight helped settle dust and moisture. Several fruit trees are blooming though most are not yet advanced enough to be damaged by a freeze.
Miss Constance Duncan of Alpine is selected as one of seven 1942 Ranch Girls to participate in the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth March 13 22. She is a Sul Ross State College student and a two time Tex as pistol champion, famed cougar hunter’s daughter, and plans to ride her Palomino Forty-niner in the world championship rodeo segment.
Fort Davis report says Mrs. Richard K. Merrill, living on a Limpia canyon ranch, hopes to buy a four wheel buggy drawn by one or two horses. She owns a suitable horse and envisions riding into town for mail, noting rubber tires are not essential.
Judge Eugene Cartledge, aged 4, longtime Austin lawyer and head of a prominent firm, died in Austin last Friday. He began in San Angelo in 1880, moved to Austin in 1894, and fathered Wayne and Bob Cartledge of Brewster County. Funeral was held in San Angelo Sunday.
Region 8 tourney at Marfa pits five teams in an elimination format directed by Coach L. Martin of Marfa. Alpine High Bucks face Mentone after an earlier clash with Clint, with Imperial and Stanton also in the bracket. Final 8:30 p.m. championship. Mentone looms strong as Alpine fights to reach the state meet.
Twenty five law enforcement officers from Brewster and Presidio counties attended an FBI led conference here Wednesday with D A Bryce in charge. Sessions covered Traffic Control Social Security Act Violations and Air Raid Precaution Duties. An open forum addressed National Defense and officer cooperation. The FBI urged reporting violations and assisting investigations while promising future regional conferences. In Brooklyn a man charged with striking a pedestrian pleaded extenuation claiming a windscreen sticker impaired his vision.
Fort Davis Baptists commit to a new church edifice with groundbreaking scheduled for Sunday afternoon March 8 at 4 o clock. A contract to Ralph W Peters of Alpine for 12142 20 dollars excludes heating and furnishings. The stone building on a half block near the courthouse will seat about 200 in a 43 feet 6 inches by 36 feet main auditorium with a 150 person Sunday school foyer and a 17 by 25 feet classroom wing. The project, led by Pastor Horace C Goodman and member W A Moller, reflects the church’s effort since October.
County fiber plants including agave lechuguilla yucca and sotol are eyed for large scale production to support fiber and alcohol needs for national defense. Experiments by Hannolds Boquitas and Hopson Alpine show potential, with unfarmed desert areas across the border offering opportunities. Researchers note guayule rubber growth rising and cross-border cooperation possible, toward sustained local industry.
Alpine named among towns receiving maximum fire credit of 7 percent per year as announced by State Fire Insurance Commissioner Marvin Hall. The credit would save property owners about $4.25 on fire insurance written during the 12 months beginning March.
Drs. Joe Wright Malone Hill and Frank P. Mathews attended the El Paso County Medical Society meeting in El Paso Monday night. Dr N D Bus, president of the State Medical Association, was the speaker at the gathering.
Sul Ross College and Alpine High School shops join a national wartime effort by manufacturing machine parts for defense. Students gain production experience and wages while local foundries cast components for California assembly plants. The college will offer welding and machine shop training, and model airplanes for Army Navy use will be built. A Victor J. Smith blower aids Sandia Cave excavations, enabling dust-free extraction and aiding archaeology and paleontology.
