A reader letter attacks Mountain Peaks calling it the crippled child of the Avalanche and ridicules the column for reader bragging while praising some readers. It notes unsigned critique and quotes favorable letters from Arch Garner P E Ritch and Air Cadet Eugene R Manning.
A stray dog, later nicknamed Fifinella, gave birth to nine puppies in the Cadet detachment orderly room. Lt. Gregory notified Capt. Reece, who phoned the hospital then sent a canine correspondent to manage the situation as cadets debated lineage and ownership bids. Several officers expressed interest in adopting a puppy as staff and cadet families weighed prospects.

Sul Ross graduate Lieut. Ellis Eugene Mans is missing in action over Europe after serving with the U S Army Air Forces. He earned the Air Medal December 1 for downing two Fw 190s during a mission, and held a B S in Agriculture from Sul Ross in 1941 as an early serviceman alum.
Local residents are urged to donate used magazines for men at the flying school. Donated magazines should be brought to the Red Cross sewing room in the Masonic building and will be picked up regularly for delivery to the field. The note praises the army and mentions Mr. Hershey as a model for youths. Also marks Bob on the Super-Duper Honor Roll due to a change of address.
The Brewster County War Price and Ration board announces certain shoes are on the non rationed list effective February 25. Eligible items include Huaraches released before June 1, 1943, completed shoes packed before April 16, 1943, ski and skate shoes, strap sandals, and fabric or imitation leather uppers with specific heel limits. Merchants may sell one pair per customer without rationing currency. Your scrap metal drive message follows.
The Alpine Cemetery association met at City Hall on Feb 17 and elected President Mrs. C. G. Morrison Vice President Mrs. J. B. Casner and Secretary Treasurer Mrs. H. Dallman. A rising vote thanked retiring officers Mrs. W. E. Miller and Mr. D. Barker for three years of service. The group seeks perpetual care to prevent uncaretaking as dues decline with families moving from Alpine. They also strive to weed lots twice yearly but lack funds for all care.
H L Kokernot Jr, local rancher, paid the top price at the Southwestern Livestock show in El Paso, buying Paul Weyerts fourth place heavy calf for 30 cents a pound and returning it for resale. He also bought Falks back proceeds, donated a lamb to the Red Cross, and supported Alpine FFA. Other calves and lambs sold included Ottis Coggins Jr.’s calf at 19 1/4 cents and Frank Daugherty’s fourth place lamb at 26 cents. Six calves returned home for further feeding locally.
A March 5 meeting will explain the State Bell Conservation service and soil conservation districts benefits. A Huxbendry department head and Alpine school staff assist in organizing, urging Brewster and Fort Davis residents to attend and learn about conservation advantages and farm fertility.
Due to rubber shortages and a rise in new tire use by Texas operators, the DPA orders a firmer stance on recapping. Operators are urged to reduce loads and speeds, ensure tires are recapped before wear reaches the recapping stage, and monitor tires closely to maintain safe operation.
The Big Bend Sentinel published a special 28 page Flying School edition last week by R. W. Jacobs. MAR PACTS, the Advanced Flying School weekly, first edition appeared Tuesday featuring Col. Gerald Hoyle and other features created for host personnel.
Lt. Thomas J. Kemminski, Class of 43 B, the first to graduate from the advanced flying school here, was killed in a Kentucky airplane accident. Officials said details were not disclosed and he was a Chicago resident serving his country.
A two week American Red Cross Standard First Aid course starts Monday at 7 p.m. and runs 7 to 9 nightly through March 12. Open to those 17 and older, it meets in Room 248 of the Sul Ross Library with Miss Lutie Britt as instructor.
The Midland Bombers defeated the Crippled AFL Five by 35 to 26 last Friday night in Midland. Led by Cline with 19 points, the Bombers dominated the attack as key Cobra players Lt. Van Hoorewoeke and George Pinson were absent, leaving the visitors outmatched in floor play and teamwork.
Alpine residents urged to prune overhanging tree limbs and pile yard debris for free pickup by the city. The Alpine Garden Club announces the effort with support from Mir Skevington and city crews to haul away rubbish next week, while burning yard papers near empty lots is discouraged.
The Watkins Estate v. Asa A. Jones and others with the State of Texas as intervener is in district court this week before Judge Hunter Metcalfe. The suit centers on property boundaries in the county’s southeastern area, focusing on the southwest corner of block 61 from an 1880s survey. State representation is by Fagan Dickson, assistant attorney general. Petit jurors were excused for the term.
The courthouse reports 1943 license plate tags arriving, smaller four by one inch metal pieces with yellow numbers and black letters. Only eight sold so far, and tags cannot be attached until March 1 with a deadline of April 1 to operate without them. Brewster County allocations: 1000 passenger tags AS 550 to AS 1549, 350 truck MC 3530 to MC 3879, 200 farm BR 810 to BR 1069, 100 trailer TB 9690 to TB 9749. Texans urged to turn in scrap metal to the Army to help war needs.
Alpine citizens may file declaration forms today at two locations to obtain War Ration Book No 2 as part of the March 1 processed foods rationing program. School teachers staff the high school and Centennial school sites to assist, while Lubbock officials urge households to bring copies of War Ration Book One for all family members and fill forms before signature. The A B and C blue stamps totaling 48 points go into effect March 1, with tables of values distributed to grocers for clear labeling.
