CPL ordered to sell Big Bend plants in action by SEC

Central Power and Light Co faced a Securities and Exchange Commission order to dispose of all Big Bend properties including lines serving Sart Alpine Fort Davis Marathon Presidio Delmorte Saragont Valentine and Marfa Alpine Presidio Balietes. Brewster county men were inducted into the armed forces at Fort Bliss El Paso in February. Poll taxes paid in Brewster County tally announced

Brewster County poll tax payments totaled 999 after a final check at the tax collector's office. The figure is roughly 600 below the 1944 election year total but high for a non election year. The San Vicente box has merged with Terlingua, leaving five precincts countywide. Two more admittees bring the list to 290 guaranteed.

Autrey Dies After Stroke at Westside Courts

FE Autrey, 63, died at his home last Thursday after a recent stroke. He and his wife ran touring courts since moving from Sheffield in 1941, previously operated near Sheffield for six years. Born in Pine Hill Alabama, he lived in Texas many years, worked as yardmaster for T P railroad at Big Spring, and trained in farming at Roscoe, Barnhart, and Rankin. Funeral in Sheffield with Rev Wittner and Rev Bailey officiating. Surviving are his widow and a son, plus two daughters in Sheffield and Waynesboro.

Brewster County Opens War Fund Drive March 1

Brewster County's annual Red Cross War Fund drive opens March 1 with a county quota of 8900. Don Littleton, county Red Cross chairman, says committees are appointed and the drive will run through March. National goal is 200 million with over three million volunteers aiding efforts. Local chairman Mex Clay Holland named committees to assist. Air Field plans an all out national drive toward the 2000000 total. Frank E. Robinson directs a strong campaign under Col. A J Kerwin Malone.

Former Alpine Resident Dies in Kerrville Funeral for Mrs Paris Held

Former Alpine resident Mrs. Paris died Friday in Kerrville after a visit with her mother Mrs. A F Robinson. Services were held Sunday at Smith Chapel with Rev. Stanley Haver and Rev J R Hilliard officiating. Interment followed at Glen Rest Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late W J Coursey and Fannie Coursey, survived by husband Col W D Henson with the armed forces in France two daughters Mrs J A Cabiness of Longview and Mrs J A Ric tes of Houston, one brother J Coursey of Dallas and two grandchildren.

Alpine Pilot Downs Two More Enemy Planes

First Lt. John L. Sublett of Alpine Texas and Lt. Ira A. Swope of Killeen Texas with the 387th Fighter Group helped down two German planes during a mission northwest of Berlin. Sublett claimed his fifth and sixth kills while the unit set an Eighth Air Force record by destroying 5744 Luftwaffe interceptors, with most losses in air combat. Sublett's cockpit victory came after he and Swope vectored onto a group and Sublett fired on a damaged plane that tumbled down. Sublett is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace R. Sublett. his wife, Ovella Nixon, resides in Odessa. He previously taught at Sul Ross College in Alpine.

Instructed Verdict In Theft Case In Court Here

An instructed verdict was returned in the theft case of Christine Johnson alias Christine Fuller in district court here Tuesday. Jurors were excused for the term after disposal. Benefacto Victoriano received a two year term after pleading guilty to cattle theft in the case Maurice Minchen versus Watson et al trespass to try title a verdict was found for the plaintiff.

Alpine Man’s Invention Nets $250 Victory Award

Alpine resident Tom Matthews, a civilian air field worker, received a $250 award from Lt. Col. James A. Gunn for a suggested plan to salvage airplane wings. The invention is credited with saving the government about $9,900 yearly, saving roughly 300 man hours per plane. Matthews, at the field since Dec 1, 1942, is son of Mr and Mrs Sloan I Matthews and has a daughter Judy Lou. They reside on the Fort Davis road in Alpine.

James G Rooney Dies in San Angelo Gun Accident

James G Rooney 51 a member of a prominent Trans-Pecos family and Alpine native was killed Tuesday in San Angelo when a gun he was removing from a steel cabinet in his office discharged. He had run a San Angelo service station for two years and earlier worked in oil at Iraan and owned a Ford agency in Fort Stockton. Grey Ladies Recruited for MAAF Hospital Rehab Work

Red Cross recruits civilian women from Alpine and Marfa to assist in hospital rehabilitation amid military personnel shortages. Big Bend 4 H FFA Livestock Show Planned at Alpine

Arrangements are complete for Brewster and Jeff Davis counties first annual Big Bend 4 H and FFA Livestock show to be held in Alpine next Tuesday. County agent Frank Newsom and vocational agriculture teacher R C Mitchell announced the event with a sales committee of local ranchmen and business leaders aiding. Calves and lambs will compete for cash prizes including 50 and 38 dollars for grand and reserve champion calves and 15 and 10 dollars for grand and reserve champion lambs. additional special prizes are planned. The program includes judging by A J BierSchwab, Cauble and Munn placing fat lambs, Britton auctioning, with show start times 10 a m for lambs, 1 30 p m calves, and 2 30 p m the sale. The event aims to become an annual show highlighting 4 H and FFA youth from Brewster and Jeff Davis counties, with endorsements from the Brewster County Commissioners Court dated Feb 12 1945. Miss Sue 8 Mann resigned to supervise rural schools in Johnson County.
