May 17 Set For Award Of Contract for Alpine highways

Resident Engineer Sid Surratt announced tentative bid dates for multiple Texas highway widening projects. The first targets State Highway 223 the Loop Road in Alpine from U S 90 north to SH 115 with a 40 foot wide roadway and 24 foot asphalt plus 8 foot shoulders. A July 23 bid date is planned for widening US 87 from US 90 east of Alpine to the Pecos County line.

Activities Planned For Retired People In Alpine

Paul Forchheimer led a meeting of the Alpine Chamber area development committee to discuss activities for retired residents. Attendees included Alvin Beckman Mark Hopking Allan Schonberg Paul Groselaude Ray Dudley Charles Bunn Charles Boreing and John Newell. A follow up gathering was planned within two weeks with possible projects and a note on housing shortages and mobile homes. Boreing, chamber president, pledged chamber support.

Alpine Twin Peaks on 1963 Texas Official Highway Map

Alpine is featured on the 1963 Texas Official Highway Map with Twin Peaks in the backdrop and a landscape of Texas scenes including El Camino del Rio. A brochure by the Alpine Chamber promotes a rail trip from Ojinaga to Topolobampo, Mexico at 69 dollars per person, with travel service and five hotel nights. Cub Scouts Get Awards at Alpine Blue and Gold Banquet

Thirty four awards were presented at the Blue and Gold Cub Scout awards banquet in the Alpine Community Center with about 125 in attendance. Rev. Clyde Chesnutt spoke, Jack Frost gave the invocation, and Cubmaster Harlan Ford announced Bear and Wolf awards along with service star pins for various scouts. Notable visitors included Danny Pate and Tim and Dr. and Mrs. Clifford B. Casey of Austin.

Gene Benson Dies Here in Alpine Area

Gene Benson a longtime livestock broker in the Alpine area died at Brewster County Memorial Hospital at 5 30 am Funeral services were set for 4 pm today at First Methodist Church Alpine with Rev Clyde Chesnutt officiating Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery Born July 17 1903 in Archer County he moved to Alpine in 1906 He is survived by his widow his mother a brother a sister and two nieces Active pallbearers were named from local residents.

Brewster County Dimes Drive Total Reaches 1945

Brewster County campaign chairwoman Mrs. Avora Owens announced the 1963 March of Dimes drive grossed 1945.28. She thanked Homer Hudgins Alpine chairman and local groups for support, and noted a scholarship to be awarded next year. Contributions by Alpine Mailers, schools, clubs, firms, and events totaled 172 fas.

Two Candidates for City Council Announced for April Election

Two candidates filed for City Council seats in the April 2 election. Incumbent C D McCollister seeks re election while Wallace Neu is a new candidate. Holdovers include Mayor Bill Winter and councilmen W E Lockhart and W J Newell. McCollister owns Siesca Motel. Neu runs Mountain Zone TV and Alpine TV Cable Inc. He moved to Alpine in 1949 after Army service in Europe and is a Sul Ross State College graduate with a wife Janett and four children.

Practice Rodeo Set for Sunday

Young rodeo fans are invited to attend a demonstration rodeo at Curley Davis arena on Mosely Lane at 2 p m this Sunday. Pete Shouppe notes strong interest as Alpine plans a Junior Rodeo this year offering newcomers a chance to learn and practice events. Principal and coaches to accept Crane trophy dinner

Principal Donald Stevens and coaches Joe McFarling and Joe Boyd along with football captains Joe Molinar and Joe Wright will travel to Crane on Thursday February 21 for the football dinner. They will accept the Sportsmanship trophy presented annually by the Crane Lions Club.

Park Stamp Favored by Texas House Unanimously

The Texas House passed a concurrent resolution urging the postmaster general to issue a commemorative stamp for Big Bend National Park. Rep. Gene Hendryx of Alpine led the effort with Eric Williams of Alpine. The measure advances to the Senate where Dorsey Hardeman of San Angelo is expected to support it.

The Alpine Buck Band Boosters Club will meet at 7:30 tonight in the High School Band Hall. After a short business meeting, a fan interesting program will be presented by Mrs. Luther Anderson. Sublett Seeks Alpine School Board Seat in April Election

Alpine native John L. Sublett announced his candidacy for the Alpine School Board in the April 6 election. Two seats will be filled for three-year terms vacated by Jeff Graham and Ed Foley. Sublett, a 1939 Alpine High School graduate, served as a lieutenant colonel in World War II and is now studying government at Sul Ross. he and his wife have a son Johnny in high school. Filing deadline is midnight March 6.

Fort Davis School Calls Election on Bonds

Fort Davis Independent School District calls an election for Saturday March 9 to issue 50000 in bonds. Funds would add a room to Central School install a new gym floor and fund general repairs. Property taxpayers with poll taxes or exemptions may vote. Balloting at Jeff Davis County Courthouse from 8 to 7 pm.

Stanton Girls Edge Alpine In District Finish

Stanton girls defeated Alpine 39 to 35 in Alpine on Tuesday afternoon, securing second place in the district as Lakeview of San Angelo took first and Alpine finished third. Rosie Adamson led Alpine with 21 points. visits by Mrs. J. W. Shepperd and Mr. Harry Carpenter to Dr. and Mrs. John W. O'Donnell in San Antonio were noted.

The Alpine Chapter of Future Homemakers of America will hold its annual banquet at 7 tonight in the Central School Cafeteria.
