Over 1500 single family lots 60 by 110 feet sold between Terlingua and Lajitas by Big Bend Frontier. Recording 1500 plus deeds, District Clerk Sara Pugh notes buyers hail from across the United States including Alaska. Filing fee is 1.50 each as the county taps real estate activity and furthers park country travel chatter.
Dr. William D. Hall, associate professor of missions at Texas Christian University, will speak at the First Christian Church during Religious Emphasis Week at Sul Ross State College. Services start Sunday morning and Monday through Wednesday evenings at 7 30 p m except Wednesday. A Fellowship Supper is set for Wednesday night at 7.
A trio of one act plays will be staged Monday and Tuesday nights Feb 18 and 19 at the Alpine Community Center. Overture directed by Pris cilla Low features Kitty Cleveland Virginia Thomas Jenney Geeson and Dr Kathryn Boyd. Long Wrong Number directed by Bob Halpern includes Carolen Holland Lorraine Laurent Karen Brown Dennis Dyke Bobby Rains Earl Anderay Laurene Lighthouse Alice Reid Olson George Brown Earlene Anderau David Forchheimer and Alice Williams. The Breaking of Bread directed by Wayne Whatley is a Civil War drama with Leroy Dragoo as the Yankee soldier and Nike Pike as the Rebel. Members admitted by card and the public may buy tickets at the Community Center.
Religious Emphasis Week will run February 18 to 21 on the Sul Ross campus. Dr Mayron Shields, schedule chairman, announced joint sponsorship by Alpine churches and Sul Ross State College to foster religious discussion and training. Guest speakers include Klaude Kendrick, Dale Durham, Andrew Burke, William Hall, Stanley Lockhart, James Rodger, and James Kirkpatrick, visiting classes and holding 10 am and 9 am assemblies in the main auditorium.
Mexico will spend 60000 dollars on improvements at Ojinaga across the Rio Grande from Presidio under the National border Program. Brewster Alpine and Presidio councils host a Scouters Roundtable in Alpine First Methodist Church at 7 30 p m led by Gene Corder of Marfa and Carl Williams of Alpine with district reps from Pecos and Midland presiding. Carl Corbin of Midland will speak. Mac Rogers of Pecos assists. All scouters urged to attend. Scout troops in Alpine mark Red anniversary with Troop 41 celebrating 40 years. 11 scouts were honored at a church court of honor on Feb 10. Troop 41 is sponsored by the Alpine First Methodist Church. leadership includes Carl Williams as Scoutmaster and Don Curtis and Tommy Chapman as assistant scouts masters.
Warren Shouppe was named chairman of Alpine's newly formed Junior Rodeo, organized by local residents to host events in late summer. Attendees included Charles Boreing and officials from the National Junior Rodeo Association discussed August dates. other locals expressed interest in joining and affiliating with the NJRA. Also noted are funeral news for Jeff Hutchison, longtime West Texas cowhand, and ties to Alpine’s ranching history.
Moisture from this week’s snowfall aids rangelands in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains country. Grass is turning green and moisture will boost weed growth while cutting feeding costs. Alpine measured 5 inches of snow and 26 inches of precipitation from Monday and Tuesday at the KVLF weather station. Snow melted slowly after clearing Wednesday, moisture soaking the ground. Alpine public schools were dismissed Tuesday due to heavy roads and cold weather.
Nellie Mae McElroy announced the sale of her ranch south of Alpine to Jack K. Reynolds and D. D. Deen for 13 783 dollars per acre totaling 145 000. The property, once established by James Cotter around 1900, was long known as the Newt Gourley Ranch, named after the late Brewster County sheriff Newt Gourley.
The screwworm eradication program will extend sterile fly releases along the Rio Grande on the New Mexico Arizona line starting tomorrow. Marvin Bridges says flies produced at Mission have already been dropped along the river. County ranchers urged further donations to support the fight, with a 50 cent per animal unit appeal and banked contributions in Alpine and Fort Davis. A separate note mentions Lindy Creigh, a student at San Marcos Baptist Academy, visiting parents after a golf ball injury.
The Alpine Zoning Commission will meet March 1 from 3 to 5 p m in the Chamber of Commerce building to consider re zoning Block 15 on North 5th Street from residential to commercial. Neville Haynes seeks approval for a shopping center with space for a grocery drug store barber beauty sportswear dry cleaning pickup and a stamp redemption center on a 90 000 square foot tract bounded by Del Rio Eagle Pass and 4th Street. Haynes said buildings would be built to operator specifications. The commission members are Bob Corkins Paul Forchheimer and Mark Hopkins. A regional workshop on re zoning municipalities last week urged officials to consult a zoning expert.
City residents vote Tuesday April 2 to elect three council members for two year terms. Incumbents Mayor Bill Winter and councilors W E Lockhart W J Newell to hold. Filing deadline March 2, no candidates yet. Election judge D M Bennett. polling at Chamber of Commerce building. Also noted a death in Chicago of Ralph Ater, former Santa Fe public relations officer and West Texas press attendee.
Alpine High School begins 1963 County Government Week with an assembly led by Student Council President David Forchheimer and Supt. Jack Frost. The program features the DAR Good Citizenship Award to Anne Hegelund, a gavell handing by the American Legion, and remarks by M. L. Hopson. Sports and weather preventor speaker. public events scheduled through Saturday include speeches, a mock trial, and courthouse rallies.
C C Crutchfield, field representative, led discussions on proposed Texas legislation at a Texas Municipal League meeting held Thursday night. City officials from the Permian Basin attended a dinner and business session at Alpine Country Club. Odessa will host the May session and Kermit the fall meeting.
Spring enrollment at Sul Ross State College reached a peak with 1154 on campus students registered. Total enrollment including extension courses rises to 1304. Monday was the final registration day. Easter holidays run April 12 to 16. Commencement set for May 19. Final exams May 22 to 24. Summer session runs June 3 to July 13 and July 15 to August 24.
Two Alpine Board of Education members Jeff Graham and id Foley face election for three year terms. Holdovers include Bill Sohl Neville Raynes Mrs Paul Forchheimer ete Gallego and Bob Halpern. Trustees approved superintendent Jack Frost’s three year contract extended summer school and enrollment program and directed exploration of a June July recreation program.
Crane High School boys basketball defeated Alpine 60 to 41 to claim the district championship. Alpine top scorers were Bill Boreing 14 Shaw n Kinner 9 Joe Valen 26. Crane also won the B game 64-40. Alpine’s top scorer was Guy Woodruff. Alpine’s boys later fell to Marfa 90-66 with Joe Freddy Granado 20, Joe Valenzuela 19, Joe Molinar 13.
