Mrs. Gus Jones of Las Vegas writes from Marathon recalling Brewster County life from 1893 to 1925 and the mystery of 13 graves near Nevill springs. She asks if any readers remember the graves or the April 1097 marker, and shares homespun Big Bend anecdotes.
Fort Davis correspondent recounts an excerpt from a December 10 1709 Senate message and a January 4 1800 Ulster County Gazette replica. The items highlight European war news with names like Suwarrow Daendals and Mannheim while noting modern tech like airplanes and radio.
Alpine high school basketball team fundraiser yields about 90 dollars from a box supper Tuesday night. Receipts total 99.70 with expenses 8.50. About 40 boxes sold. top box prize of 5 dollars went to J. C. Weston. Lois Burleson received a makeup kit. Louise Cross won a race over Coleene Stephens and others. Funds will defray team expenses and buy equipment. The team beat Marfa's second string 28-21 before Marfa's first string won 37-31. The band performed and the local team prepares for a district meet at Ft. Stockton against Mentone Imperial.
Charles Dockson a 50 year old Detroit manufacturer admitted to Baylor Hospital February 3 with a dangerous ear infection was discharged Monday night His physician a brain specialist said he was in good shape Dockson traveled by ambulance to the train and was not confined to bed on the journey to his Detroit home He became critically ill while en route to California and had been in Alpine Texas hospital from January 16 to February 2 awaiting favorable weather for an airplane trip to Dallas.
Clare Major, founder of the Children’s Theatre of New York, cites Johanna Spyri as a subtle psychologist in Heidi. Her March 13 Sul Ross show, under Davis Federation of Women’s Clubs sponsorship, presents Heidi’s emotional growth and the healing power of love amid family upheaval and loneliness.
The February district court term opened with Hunter Metcalfe presiding as judge. Grand jury organized with W D Boreham foreman and recessed. Petit jurors reported for duty with non jury cases set this week including several civil suits with judgments for plaintiffs and cases dismissed or consolidated. The murder case of Harry Tracy tied to the Martinez death at a sheep camp is set for next Monday.
The Greek Bell fund in Campeign, with funds sent to the New York national headquarters, lists donors including George Lines, W. Harvey, Vernon McIntyre, Holland Motel, Model Tailors, Williams & Vogt and many others contributing amounts from 25 cents to $125. Continued on last page.
May or L. B. Starns endorses nationwide American Legion plan to register Legionnaires and WW2 veterans on a voluntary basis for future defense service. Big Bend Post No. 19 conducts local registration with chairmen Terry Shelly Clarence Ellison Walter Fulcher and Bill Dorris coordinating in Alpine Marathon and Terlingua. National Commander Milo J Warner proclaims February 22 as official Legion national defense registration day.
Dr Umphrey Lee president of S M A Dallas has captivated his hearers during Spiritual Emphasis Week at the college auditorium. The local ministerial association and Sul Ross college sponsor the event. Attendance notes say many regret missing talks and wish they had attended all sessions. Lee spoke at yesterday's Rotary luncheon on conditions in Germany and other parts of Europe he has visited recently.
The Trans-Pecos campaign reestablishes antelope herds with seed transfers from the state fish hatchery. Longest move covered 633 miles from the upper Big Bend to Sarita, with 385 miles to Blackwell. Airplane roundup proved cheaper and faster than horse methods, led by Dr. Lee W. Fisher and pilot J. C. Casparis. Antelopes avoided camouflaged wire. a tarpaulin gate and scent factors aided captures.
McDonald Observatory assistant director Dr C T Elvey told Fort Davis club members that comets have no true individuality or light source of their own. He described comets as nebulous bodies reflecting sunlight, with tails formed by light, not solid matter, and discussed their vast lengths and recurring orbits including Halley’s comet. He warned that even a hypothetical tail touch to Earth would cause no injury due to lack of substance.
Plans for a House Appropriations Committee trip to the Big Bend park area are not finalized awaiting Austin advices. A 21 member party from Ross College will stop in Alpine after inspecting the School of Mines in El Paso. They will travel by local cars, spend Sunday in Marathon, and return to Austin by Pullman. The committee considers a 1.5 million dollar land acquisition bill for the park area.
The First Christian Church will start a two story native stone annex west of the main church building. The 30 by 42 foot structure will include a kitchen dining room and assembly space on the lower floor and Sunday school rooms on the upper floor. Plans by W J Smith are approved with building and finance committees named. Work should begin soon funded by a major contribution from Mr and Mrs J D Jackson charter members.
Combined choruses of more than 100 voices from Alpine Fort Davis Marfa and Marathon towns join in a benefit concert at Sul Ross college auditorium Sunday at 3 pm. Miss Irma Lee Batey directs the adult chorus with Alpine public schools led by Miss John Wilma Kalodzie. Rev Richard Irving directs Fort Davis singers and Mrs Black Marfa. Eldon McGonagill of Marathon will be baritone soloist. A free will offering will close. Also notes NY public schools milk 1 cent half pint lunch program.
