Mechanic Severely Burned Working On Auto at Casner Co
Bernal sugar, snap foreman at Casner Motor Co, suffered serious burns to his right hand and arm last Friday afternoon while working on a carburetor. Gasoline ignited when a globe in a trouble lamp exploded. He was treated at the local hospital and later sent home on North 4th Street, where he is reported to be improving.

Alpine chamber elects Milton Smith president at annual meeting
Milton Smith proprietor of Smith Furniture Co. was elected president of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce at the annual meeting held Friday night in the high school auditorium. He succeeds W. J. Newell who served two years. Dr. O. E. Sperry headed the biology department at Sut Ros s directed vice president and Jack Cross C M Corkran and J W Frazer were named directors. The annual report by manager Glenn Burgess outlined projects for the Alpine area including Big Bend National Park advanced flying school housing for war workers highways mining and more. Col. Increased Attendance Noted In Poultry Course
The local short course in poultry shows rising attendance under teacher R C Mitchell. Twenty two students are enrolled with an average of 12 attending each meeting. Two sessions were held this week including farm visits to Mrs C F Kimball and Mrs Jim Nail. A discussion on culling hens occurred and a field trip is planned for next week.

USO Plans Talked At Recent Meeting
By order of the War department contingents of Negro troops are being placed at the airfield between Alpine and Marfa. Dr W W Jackson of the USO visiting here this week checked on locations for a Negro USO center and recommended Alpine establish one soon. Col Gerald Hoyle noted recreation for these men would be acute without a hall. The chamber of commerce urged Congress to point out the injustice of placing Negro soldiers where they lack peers of their race. Thomason discussed this with Major General.
