The Alpine Chamber of Commerce annual banquet comes Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Holland House Ballroom. Odessa banker Joe H Hodges will be the principal speaker introduced by Dick Rogers of First National Bank Alpine. Master of ceremonies is Rev. Robert Bristol with Homer Hudgins outlined 1964 achievements and the new board including Stacy Watson Jack Brock Curt Wise and Don Newbury elected president for 1965.

Terlingua may host international auto race with festival
A Dallas column notes Terlingua Texas could host an international auto race on a 5.7 mile city circuit with a 2.24 mile straightaway along Dirty Women Creek. The event would align with the Whip Scorpion or Vinegaroon Festival and Alpine Chamber of Commerce manager Peter Koch cautions the race may occur. Mrs. Weston Laid to Rest in Alpine Funeral
Funeral services for Mrs Forest Weston 61 a ranchwoman were held at 2 p m Monday at First Methodist Church Alpine. She died suddenly Friday in Walsenburg Colorado while visiting her parents. She is survived by her husband a son two sisters a brother and two grandchildren. Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery with Geeslin Funeral Home in charge.

License Tags Go on Sale in Brewster County Texas
New Texas vehicle license plates went on sale Monday in Brewster County and statewide. The white plates feature a 3 letter prefix and two or three numbers with CHJ-725 as the first Brewster County plate. Current registration receipts and title are needed to obtain plates at the tax assessor collector's office. The Alpine Chamber of Commerce discussed student recruiting for Sul Ross College and a new Student Union building, sending both issues to the Sul Ross Committee.

Shields Named Acting Comptroller at Sul Ross College
Dr. Mayron Shields head of Sul Ross State College Department of Business and Economics since 1959 was named acting comptroller pending Board of Regents approval in Nacogdoches. He succeeds Jack Stovell who died January 20 after a heart attack. Stovell had served since 1946.

Work to Begin Monday On Gas System in West Texas
The Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corp plans a Monday start on natural gas facilities for Alpine Marfa Fort Davis Toyahvale and Saragosa after securing 2 450 000 first mortgage bonds in Dallas. Montin Construction Co will build the line and distribution net with final bids due Sept 1 1965 and customer signup extended to Feb 6 1965 to save installation and conversion costs.

U S Increases Student Loan Funds at Sul Ross
Sul Ross State College received a supplemental grant of 9,900 from the U S Department of Health Education and Welfare, raising total yearly support to 55,050 under the National Defense Education Act. Brewster County Poll Tax Payments Decline Sharp
1030 poll taxes and 24 exemptions were sued in Brewster County this year, among the lowest totals in years. Last year recorded 1802 poll taxes and 111 exemptions. Since 1947 figures show a downward trend with annual totals such as 2049 in 1947 and 1124 in 1963, indicating reduced tax payments over time.

To Observe Scout Week in Alpine February
Scout week will be observed in Alpine February 7 14. On Sunday February 7 all Boy Scout uniformed will meet at First Baptist Church for the same service. They will wear uniforms all week for the 55th birthday of scouting. Alpine has two active Boy Scout troops and two active Cub Packs. VANDALS FINED Two 19 year old boys were fined 32 70 each in county court and sentenced to three days in jail for breaking six street fights. City county and state law officers cooperated in the arrests.
